Brave a treacherous rite of passage that will take you across some spectacular lands in Sable. This futuristic art piece has all the makings of an instant classic, including its beautiful art and its solid grasp on narrative progression.
Set in a world that flawlessly blends the future with the past, Sable is an unforgettable experience that is sure to be a treat for any fan of gorgeous-looking adventure games. If you have a knack for exploration games that use a cel-shaded aesthetic, and you absolutely can’t decide if you prefer medieval or futuristic settings, then this might be the game for you.
The world of Sable looks and feels like it’s been taken straight out of some forgotten mid-90s comic book. Vast desert landscapes and remnants of fallen civilizations can be found everywhere you look, giving players more than enough reason to explore all of the possibilities the game’s extensive world has to offer.
In the game, you play as sable, a young woman who has to go through her “Gliding” ritual, which is her world’s idea for a rite of passage. However, like any rite of passage, the Gliding involves a whole lot of dangers, as players explore the barren wastes of a once great civilization.
At its core, Sable is a game that’s all about exploration. Veterans of games like Journey will no doubt find a certain likeness between the two games, as SAble seems to be heavily inspired by Journey’s unique brand of exploration and minimal interaction.
Other comparisons could be made with games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, in that both games feature a similar art style and basic exploration mechanics. However, things like combat, crafting, or survival, are conspicuously absent from Sable.
Explore and Adapt
Exploration in Sable is made in two main ways: you can survey smaller locations on foot, and then jump on your hoverbike to traverse the vast desertic landscapes that await you.
Your hoverbike will be your most loyal companion in Sable. Customizable to the tiniest detail, finding new pieces for your hoverbike is one of the most rewarding activities that this game has to offer.
There are also tons of cosmetic options to customize your player character. Masks, charms, and all kinds of collectibles can be found scattered throughout the world to modify your character’s appearance, making the game experience feel authentically crafted by the player.
Like in Breath of the Wild, solving puzzles is an integral part of Sable’s gameplay loop. There are hundreds of small ability puzzles that will put your talents to the test, as these are just the kind of trials that we’re so used to seeing in these types of third-person adventure games.
While Sable’s cel-shaded presentation is absolutely superb, the star of the show could most certainly be Japanese Breakfast’s amazing soundtrack. The soothing music goes perfectly with the game’s overall aesthetic, culminating in a wonderful gaming experience that’s equal parts nostalgic and innovative.
Sable truly is a modern classic. The game’s flawless presentation and masterfully crafted puzzles will keep you coming back to Sable’s desolated world for years to come.
