Fighter games are the backbone of the gaming industry, and Saint Seiya Soldiers’ Soul is a classic example of one. This game is based off of a popular manga, with a standard fighter game structure any player will be familiar with. Players use fairly standard fighting moves to defeat various bosses, unlocking new characters along the way. There are hundreds of unlockable players to try for, most of them familiar to fans of the manga.
Somewhat repetitive fighting
Although the game does offer a huge number of different players, they all have virtually the same abilities. These only differ a little bit, so that even though you’re unlocking new characters it feels like you’re getting the same one. This combined with relatively simple controls means that the game feels mastered after just a few hours, without anything new to help players grow.
Another problem with the game is that it isn’t well balanced overall. Although there are hundreds of fighters in the game, not all of them are useable for combat. Some characters are plainly much better than others, so rather than being a preference in style, it’s whether they can be used in a fight.
Seiya for example, is a practical choice for any player because of superior speed. You can land many more moves in the same time thanks to his speed. Shun is another good character because the chain attacks are cheap and useful. Some characters don’t have any useful attacks, which makes them collectables rather than another useful member of your team.
Great character graphics
The good news is, you’ll have no trouble distinguishing your favorite character from the rest. Each character is beautifully designed and holds true to the original artwork. Special attacks are also beautifully designed. The only drawback to visuals in the whole game are the arenas you fight in, which are at best so-so.
Unique fighting style
Saint Seiya Soldiers’ Soul relies heavily on the ability to sidestep opponents for every fight. If you’re not used to evading, you may have a difficult time with the fights at first. If you’ve ever played the original game, Saint Seiya: Brave Soldiers, you should have no problem adapting to this game. Saint Seiya: Soldiers’ Soul is essentially the same game as Brave Soldiers but upgraded with improved graphics and more content. The game takes advantage of better gaming engines than when Brave Soldiers came out in 2013, and that makes a difference.
Saint Seiya Soldiers’ Soul isn’t especially unique, but it is a solid fighter game fans will enjoy. The game is an improvement on its predecessor, Brave Soldiers. It offers more content, more story, and a better gaming experience.
Although it is a solid fighter, it isn’t revolutionary by any means. Fans will enjoy the game, but if you’re looking to be awed with an amazing fighting experience, this game doesn’t quite reach those levels.
Pros:
- Tons of unlockables to collect
- No flying makes fighting easier
- Beautiful character graphics
- Plenty of content
Cons:
- Arenas are small and not beautiful
- Lots of useless characters
- Repetitive game play
