With shows like Bonanza and Gunsmoke dying in popularity, young boys who dream of becoming a cowboy or a western outlaw need a new source of inspiration to look to. Most parents will not buy a young child a game like Red Dead Redemption, but they might be able to convince themselves that a smaller game like Secret Ponchos is okay, because of its seemingly innocent cowboy world. Secret Ponchos, although quite simple, has loads of gameplay, style, and fun to offer in its isometric western world of outlaws and gangs.
The game offers an isometric view for the player as they traverse the top-down world of rival gangs and loose outlaws. As far as visuals go, the game looks like Legends of Zelda (one of the most famous top-down games) found guns and went haywire.
The dusty atmosphere is rendered well for an isometric view, with debris scattered around really adding to the environment of the anarchy in this portrayed wild west. Unlike some isometric view games, Secret Ponchos is more free roaming than others. While some have designated paths that are seem harder to steer off than it is to beat the game, Secret Ponchos lets the player go about their own way in most areas, since there is no objective other than to kill your opponent, adding an extra exploration element (although there won’t be much time since you’ll most likely get shot at every time you load in).
Secret Ponchos is a fighting game, with points and money awarded for each successful “bounty” or fight won. The game is as strategic as it is gun blazing, needing tactics for the successful ambushes your gang may have to pull off. A hard hitting force is fantastic, but not when you miss and leave your gang wide open for a counter-attack. Players can indulge in online battles, offering 1v1 fighting as well as 3v3 fighting so two of your friends can join you on your path of destruction. If you really feel you are good at the game, there is also a ranked version of the fighting play, allowing your gang of outlaws to become notorious for your brutal and unbeaten tactics.
Everyone knows that any good fighting game has some sort of customization with different characters who may possess different abilities. This is fighting game 101, taught by Street Fighter. Luckily, Secret Ponchos did not miss out on this memo, as the game offers 10 different gunslinging outlaws (and various skins for each one) for the player to choose from.
The outlaws have a variety of attacks, combos, and evades, allowing for a deep combat feel in what is visually extremely simple. Leveling up your character allows you to enhance the skills unique to your character and makes the bounty on your head worth that much more, giving others more of an incentive to kill you, and you more of an incentive to come out on top, time after time.
Secret Ponchos is engaging and allows the ability to live the outlaw dream without actually having to learn how to spin a gun on your finger without shooting yourself. I give the game a solid 8/10, only losing any points because I wish it were more popular and still alive.
