One of the most intriguing roguelike games to come out this year is Ship of Fools. This is one that a friend of mine first talked to me about and he really wanted me to play this with him in co-op. Oh yeah, you can play this in single-player, but the game appears that it is more aimed at playing with a buddy. It has a fantastic art style; a great sense of humor and it has all the things that make this a genre that is so addictive. I feel that this does more than enough to offer something different from all the other roguelike games out there.

The Aquapocalypse Is Coming!

The setting for Ship of Fools is the Archiepago and there was this special lighthouse that kept these islands safe. Well, it is broken and there are all kinds of nasty creatures roaming the sea and causing a whole heap of trouble. It is up to you to be the captain of The Stromstrider, take to the seas, fight off sea monsters and try to survive the aquapocalypse that is destroying the land and sea!

The Ocean Is A Cruel Mistress

A huge part of Ship of Fools is actually being on your ship and this is the part of the game that has me really excited. Each time that you head out on an adventure, you will be randomly attacked by all kinds of creatures on the sea. You have to fight off these enemies with cannons, abilities, and items, and if you are playing with a friend, teamwork. It is the teamwork aspect that greatly appeals to me, I love the idea of me having to fix the ship while my friend is fending off these evil sea creatures that want us dead!

Island Life

While the action is taking place on the high seas, you can also go to the various islands that make up the place where Ship of Fools is set. Here you can find treasures, items, and shops where you can get new items and stuff to make your next jaunt on the sea that extra bit more exciting. This is where the roguelike nature of the game comes into play and I am sure it is a system we are all familiar with, but the overall style of this game is something different and I feel that is what makes it stand out.

Three Things Come To Mind!

It was the cartoon style of Ship of Fools (well that and my buddy's great sell job) that make me take some real interest in this game. I love the style of the visuals and it is a mixture of three different things, two games which are Don’t Starve and the recently released Cult of the Lamb. However, it also reminds me of Futurama as well, specifically the episode where they go to help Kip give birth, very specific I know. Anyway, the game has a ton of charm to it and I think this is going to greatly make you want to keep on playing and go for just one more run.

Look, I will admit that the roguelike genre is getting very, very crowded and in 2022 alone we have had a ton, but to be fair, many of them have been great. I feel that what we have here with Ship of Fools is very special and a game that I think is going to close out the onslaught of roguelikes we have had in 2022 very well. I will be honest and say that I feel you do need to play with someone else to get the best out of it, but you can try and play it on your own if you want.
