The first time that I played Skullgirls was as part of the PlayStation Now service when I had a trial for it. I saw the art and thought it looked very stylish so I gave it a try. I was so glad that I did as this is an epic fighting game, seriously it is one of my favorite fighting game series of all time now. The amount of versions of this game that I own is crazy, I have it on PlayStation 4 (the collector's edition) PS Vita and just for Christmas, Santa Claus got me the Switch version. I even have this on my PC!
I Want The Skull Heart
There is a story and lore to Skullgirls that I think is pretty neat there is this thing called The Skull Heart and it will grant a wish to a woman who wields it. Skull Girls are warriors that are willing to fight and try to get the Skull Heart so that the nation they represent can get a wish, heck some even just want it for their own needs. It is great stuff and there is a fantastic variety to the characters in this game.
Giving Everyone A Try
I was so blown away by the character models in Skullgirls that it is one of the few fighting games where I have actually tried out every single character. The cast of characters is great and ranges from a catgirl, a posh spice lookalike, and my personal favorite, Valentine who is a nurse who attacks with syringes. The art in this game is probably my favorite of any fighting game that I have played. Yes, the girls have big bouncy boobs and some have revealing clothing, however, the art is more than just T and A! The various stages look fantastic and help get you more invested in this amazing world that has been created here.
Quarter Circle Punch
While Skullgirls is an amazing looking and sounding game. As far as the gameplay goes, it is one of the finest fighting games to be released in the last couple of decades. You have a three punch and three kick system similar to Street Fighter. Each character has their own special moves, fighting style, meters to fill for ultra-powerful attacks and there are tons of combos too. It is a game that is easy to pick up and play to just screw around with, but there is also a real level of depth for those willing to master a character. The game is just so much fun to play, seriously no matter what kind of fighting game player you are, you are going to have fun here.
As you can tell I love the Skullgirls series and think that you cannot go wrong with any of the games. The original game is a great place to start as it is more “stripped back” compared to the additions that would be added. Still, it truly is an amazing time, it is the kind of game that you can pick up and play for ten minutes or spend a whole evening with.
- The cast of characters is great
- This is one of the best looking fighting games ever made
- The characters have a ton of personality
- Gameplay is easy to learn, but hard to master
- The later releases do offer more than this first game
- I think a deeper story mode with these characters in this first game would have been amazing
