Who said the days of the 16-bit mascot platformers are over? Spectacular Sparky manages to feel like an abandoned SNES title that time forgot. At the same time, the referential humor and gorgeous sprite art speak of a game that’s made as a love letter to a bygone era of gaming.
Featuring some truly gorgeous pixel art and impressively well-designed stages, Spectacular Sparky is a masterclass in game design. Fans of the 16-bit era of games will find here a bona fide must play, and more contemporary gamers will find in this game a challenging experience that’s worth more than a single playthrough.
At first glance, Spectacular Sparky might seem like a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog, in the same vein as Sonic Mania. However, once the hectic Sparky pulls out his laser guns, every similarity with blue hedgehogs disappears completely.
An explosive mixture of platforming and shooting, Spectacular Sparky never relents in its quest to become a modern 2D classic. Like in every good 2D action platformer, mobility is impeccable in this game, with every button press reacting instantly and allowing for complete control over Sparky.
As a space rabbit, Sparky has access to an extensive arsenal of gigantic guns. Also, his jumping abilities are increased by flapping his long ears, allowing players to maneuver the game’s platforming sections with ease.
Hunting space fugitives across the galaxy is no easy task: this is another area where Spectacular Sparky pays homage to the golden era of platformers – its insane difficulty. Fortunately for some players, the game’s difficulty is quite versatile, allowing you to set it at a level that caters to your gaming skill.
Inspired by the look of classic Sega Genesis games, Spectacular Sparky’s visuals are a sight to behold, especially for retro games fans. Multiple layers of parallax scrolling, and a technique similar to Sega’s famous “Blast Processing” allows the game to look just like if it came out in 1992.
However, unlike those games, this title features fully voiced-over lines. While this is a decision that might cause some disgust in the more traditional gamers, the option to turn down these voices is always available.
Beating the game will be no easy feat, especially when you consider the sheer amount of variety that’s to be found in each stage. Featuring five worlds with 24 levels each, there’s an impressive amount of content for a game with a file size that is smaller than a modern game’s update.
Bosses and Vehicles
Fighting the game’s bosses will prove to be a true test of skill, as most of these giant enemies are fought in a 2D shooter perspective. Suddenly, Sparky stops being about jumping on platforms and becomes a full-on bullet hell simulator.
Both game modes – platforming and shooting – feel very well realized, featuring tight and responsive controls and a healthy amount of variety. The fact that the colors of Sparky’s world are so saturated and vivid is a plus, as it helps in distinguishing the enemies from the background in some of the game’s more hectic segments.
Spectacular Sparky is proof that the 2D platforming genre is still alive and well. Featuring some impressive level designs and solid gameplay, this is a game that’s sure to be enjoyed by retro games fans and by those looking for a challenge.
