Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is the videogame adaptation of the animated series of the same name created by Nickelodeon. In this action title, we will control two of the members of the Protostar crew, who have fallen into a planet system that is about to be destroyed by a supernova. Our objective will be to reunite the rest of our companions and save the galaxy.
Even with how popular it is as a franchise, it's noticeable the lack of video games based on the Star Trek universe. Outright Games, a leading publisher of interactive entertainment products for the whole family, has joined forces with Paramount Consumer Products and Nickelodeon to launch Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova. The game is based on Star Trek: Prodigy, an action-packed, adventure-packed original animated series from Paramount+. It is the first Star Trek video game designed to be enjoyed by the whole family. Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova launches today for PlayStation 4®, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch™, Xbox One, Xbox X|S, and Steam. But what is this game all about?
About the game
The story of Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova has been developed by Tessera Studios, and puts us in the shoes of Dal R'Ei and Gwyndala, two of the crew members of the Protostar, a ship stolen from Starfleet. While flying in space in search of people to help, the group detects a strange signal in an area where the solar star of Naroanes, which is about to become a supernova that will destroy all the planets around it.
Upon arriving there, the controls of the Protostar ship begin to fail and the group is forced to make an emergency landing on one of the planets. There we will have to reunite our companions and save the solar star of Naroanes from destruction and the threat of the evil Drednok, known as the System Destroyer.
In some adaptations of television or film works, the player may be required to know beforehand the material from which the game is derived. In this case, those who do not know the series can rest assured that the story of the game can be followed without any problems. The only thing is that there will be some minor details that we will not understand, but nothing that will prevent us from enjoying its plot.
One of the most outstanding elements of Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova is that the game allows us to play in cooperative mode. In the case that we play alone, we can change characters whenever we want to quickly and with the push of a button. This allows its combat system to be dynamic, both in cooperative and individual modes.
Not enough star trek games
Star Trek is one of the most popular science fiction franchises in the whole galaxy, and that's what makes it incredibly strange that there aren't many games about Star Trek. This is pretty much the very first game in the franchise made to be enjoyed by the entire family. Unlike Star Wars, Star Trek does not have an adaptation similar to LEGO Star Wars to make it big into the gaming market. This does bring a lot of attention and weight to the shoulders of Star Trek Prodigy: Supernova.
This game is based on a TV show, so if you are familiar with the material, then you should be able to enjoy yourself just fine. If you're not, though, you might find the story confusing. Especially if you've never seen anything Star Trek-related. And while the story is solid and the gameplay decent, there are some issues when it comes to interactions.
The AI isn't too developed, and it tends to make some dumb decisions.
- Coop mode
- Fun battle mechanics
- Hard to follow the plot
- Some bad choices by the AI
