The first trailer that was shown for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin certainly raised some eyebrows! This is a very strange entry in the series and while Square-Enix are handling the publishing duties as you would expect, they are not actually developing the game. Instead, Team Ninja are at the helm, this is actually something that I think is very cool as I am a huge fan of the games that studio makes. This is more of an action RPG and I think that it is showing a great deal of promise.
I am sure you have all seen the millions of memes that popped up after Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin was first shown. The game feels like it is taking itself very seriously, but I find that kind of fun. The origin in the title is not just there for show. The game actually takes place in the same universe as the original Final Fantasy game.
Our main character is a guy called Jack and he is part of a team called The Warriors of Light. He is joined by Ash and Jed as they try to “kill Chaos”. I know that many people have been poking fun at the story, but I think it looks kind of cool, in an emo way!
The Chefs Kiss
One of the most exciting things about Square-Enix and Team Ninja joining forces on Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is the presentation. Again, I know people have made fun of the trailer for this game. However, I think that the presentation on offer here is just fantastic. These are two of the best in the business when it comes to making great looking video games.
I joked before about it looking kind of emo, but I dig that. It has a kind of Final Fantasy XV meets Nioh vibe going on and that is something I like. The voice acting also looks great too and while the characters are all macho, moody, and serious, I am pretty confident it is all going to work and work well.
Hacking, Slashing, And Splashing!
When I first saw the trailer for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin I thought that it was a hack and slash kind of affair, but then the closer I looked the more depth I saw. Hey, do not get me wrong, there is a great deal of hacking and slashing here. However, you can change between different weapons (which from what I can tell are the game's job system) and each one offers you different attacks. I love the sound of this and see it as a bit of a middle ground between what we got with the Final Fantasy VII remake and Team Ninja’s Nioh.
In one of the trailers, we see jack face off with a powerful character called Garland and this is pretty interesting. Here we get to see some of the depth and strategy that is required in the game's combat.
I am actually very, very excited to see more of Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. I love the idea of this game and while it is meme fodder, I think that the game looks like a lot of fun and as someone who has played the original NES Final Fantasy and the re-release they did for the Game Boy Advance I am very interested to see how the story relates to it.
- I like how emo, moody and crazy the story seems
- The game is set in the same universe as the original Final Fantasy
- It looks like a movie
- The combat looks fast-paced and a whole lot of fun
- The story may be taking itself a bit too serious
- We need to see more of the gameplay outside of combat
