What do you get when you combine the charming visuals of procedurally generated dungeon crawlers with tons of pure, chaotic fun? You get Streets of Rogue, a game where anarchy is the rule, and fun is guaranteed.
The mixture of classic rogue-lite elements with procedurally-generated RPG turns this game into a unique gem; one that can be enjoyed alone or with friends. The unique gameplay of Streets of Rogue puts it into a class of its own, but does its eclectic fun hide some unexpected depth? Let’s find out.
Anarchic freedom
Streets of Rogue prides itself on allowing insane amounts of freedom to the player. This is a statement that developer Matt Dabrowski takes to heart, as there are nearly no constraints on what you can do playing this game.
At its core, Streets of Rogue is a rogue-lite where players have to complete specific tasks in order to progress. The visuals seem to be inspired by other popular rogue-lite games, such as The Binding of Isaac. However, unlike those games, the action in Streets of Rogue doesn’t take place in some damp dungeon.
Instead, players will be welcomed by an impressive, procedurally-generated city. These towns spawn multiple NPCs that go about their daily routines, minding their own business, unaware of the chaos that is all around them. This impressive random system allows each playthrough of Streets of Rogue to feel truly unique.
Play however you want
As mentioned earlier, the game’s basically a sequence of missions and tasks to complete. However, not every character has to complete the same repetitive tasks: your choice of a character influences what your objectives will look like.
From a soldier that has to use brute force, to a super-intelligent gorilla fighting for his species, possibilities are endless in Streets of Rogue. As the developer puts it, the game can even feel a bit like a top-down Deus Ex game, complete with some fun hacking mechanics.
The insane amounts of chaotic energy emanating from Streets of Rogue are off the charts. Few games leave players this amount of control over every aspect of the game: it just feels like a true virtual playground where everything goes.
Humor for all
Another point where Streets of Rogue excels is in its zany sense of humor. Of course, most of the enjoyment you’ll get out of the game comes from the sheer amount of absurd situations you can find yourself in, but the game’s witty writing also helps a huge deal.
From the outlandish characters to the charming visual design, every aspect of the game is made to appeal to players who are looking for an outrageously funny game. That said, some of the most “random” comedic elements might not be to everyone’s liking.
Streets of Rogue is one of the best and most creative rogue-lites we have ever seen. From its many absurd scenarios to the unparalleled amount of gameplay freedom, it all comes together to create a memorable experience that lets you do nearly everything you want. Some parts of the game’s humor can fall flat at times, but its zany gameplay and tons of content will keep you entertained for countless hours.
Pros:
- Impressive level of player freedom
- Fun objectives and interesting missions
- Entertaining characters and visual style
Cons:
- Some of the humor might not be to everyone’s tastes
- Combat can be a bit janky
