Developed by Actual Nerds - this is truly the developer’s name - for Actual Nerds, The Tarnishing Of Juxtia is a Metroidvania title that draws heavily on classic 90’s games for inspiration. The upcoming action-platformer will be exclusively released on Windows, and is Actual Nerd’s debut as a developer and publisher, making it a truly independent game. Without a release date set, content surrounding the game comes down to tweets, screenshots, and small gameplay videos.
Simpler Times, Simpler Games
As soon as you look at The Tarnishing Of Juxtia, you will feel like you went back on time twenty-five years - if you were alive then. The game has similar visuals, camera movement, and gameplay as the 1989’s classic Prince of Persia.
Obviously, there are a small number of similarities, but after experiencing the gameplay, mechanics, and direction of the game it is clear that The Tarnishing Of Juxtia, is a current game in touch with industry trends.
The Tarnishing Of Juxtia puts players in a 2D view, that allows them to use combos to destroy enemies. It self-proclaim itself as a souls-like combat experience, and it aims to punish players that are too eager to spam attack moves. Combat relies on their “Energy Rush” mechanic, which relies on successfully landing combos to replenish your mana and keep yourself in fighting shape.
The Tarnishing Of Juxtia also offers multiple enemies and special boss battles throughout the game. You will encounter corrupted saints, drowned wyverns, and even gods. The multi-phase boss fights feel rewarding, as by defeating these monsters you steal their powers and can use them as special attacks on your campaign.
Finally, the game allows vast customization of your playstyle. Players can mix and match multiple armors, items, spells, and gifts as they level up to craft a truly unique experience. The Tarnishing Of Juxtia boasts a pixelated aesthetic, and while simplistic, screenshots and videos show that a lot of thought was put into creating the right atmospheres for each level.
Two Realms, Two Kingdoms
The Tarnishing Of Juxtia is an unknown game when it comes to story and plot, but if their influences are anything to go by there will be deep lore hidden within the game. At first glance, though players are invited to explore the Twin Kingdoms, which are filled with enemies, allies, and marvelous items to collect. From Drizzling Oussuary to Dust Spire, all the way to the culmination of your journey in Crescentpeak, this action-packed game is sure to keep you on your feet.
For players who enjoyed the recently released Unsighted, Ori and the Blind Forest, Dead cells, and even Hollow Knight you will enjoy The Tarnishing Of Juxtia. Little information was divulged, but if their references and inspirations are any indications, these will be a challenging game to experience.
