UNSIGHTED

UNSIGHTED is an inside action-adventure, metroidvania with role-playing aspects. With an unreleased date for 2021, the game was developed by Studio Pixel Punk and published by Humble Games the game is shrouded in mystery. The Brazilian game will be released for Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X | S, Xbox One, and PC and wants to shake up the Metroidvania formula.

Depressed Lesbian Androids

You read that right, the female-led studio has described its own game as a game about lesbian androids and sadness. While it might seem weird at first, the game has multiple layers and promises more depth than that.

In fact, the game points to the classic 2D Zelda games, Demon Souls and Dark Souls as its main influences. Following its inspirations, it has the classic pixelated look, with the top-down view that is common to the genre.

Combat in UNSIGHTED derives a little bit from Bloodborne, Gears of War, Darkest Dungeon, and Hades. Only a thirty-minute demo was made available for fans, which got to briefly experience this explosive mixture. The gameplay here is actually fun, and combat feels challenging without being unfair. This is a great achievement itself since most games that are heavily influenced by multiple sources usually feel too generic, or without identity. Thankfully this is not the case here.

Android Vs. Humans

UNSIGHTED is a game about the fallout after the war between Humans and Androids that took place in Arcadia. In this post-war scenario, the androids are suffering from a shortage of fuel. Players then take the place of Alma, an android that lost its memories and is searching for a way to bring them back. During your journey you are also tasked with saving your friends, using everything you find throughout Arcadia.

The game can be tackled alone in single-player mode, or with a friend through co-op according to developers. Arcadia offers vast exploration options and multiple ways to overcome your obstacles with what you find. It is clear that the game is designed in order to allow multiple resolutions for each puzzle, or challenge, giving players the freedom to save Arcadia. There are also different weapons, and combat styles to fit every player.

The clock runs against players as their Anima is always running out, which pressures players to find unique pathways towards their objectives. UNSIGHTED offers players non-linear level designs and an upgrade system that helps players enhance Alma’s performance, and better tackle puzzles and fights. Fights are also varied and require players to be actively paying attention to their surroundings.

Conclusion

UNSIGHTED looks like a promising metroidvania. It is inspired by the greats but still manages to find its own identity amongst them. The freedom of choice plays a big role in the replayability of the title, while little is known about the story the game doesn’t seem too concerned with its narrative.
