Today I wanted to share my thoughts, opinions, theories, and hopes for The Witcher 4. Granted, next to nothing has been said by CD Projekt Red really, but if you dig through some of the interviews that members of the team have done over the last year, we can start to get some basic ideas of where the next installment in this massive franchise could be heading.
The End Of A Trilogy
One thing that I think is pretty safe to assume is that The Witcher 4 is going to be a whole new chapter in the saga of Geralt. The CEO of CD Projekt Red, Adam Kicinski stated that the first three games were clearly a trilogy. This means that it is probably not going to be called just “4” as it does sound like they want this to be the start of a new story in the saga. You do have to wonder if it will draw from the books, the Netflix show, or be something new entirely.
The Next Generation
One of the biggest questions we all have right now about The Witcher 4 is what will be playing it on. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was a fantastic game and the way they got it running on a Switch was just amazing. However, CD Projekt Red are a very ambitious studio and as Cyberpunk 2077 showed, their ambition can be made harder by the hardware they have to work with. Cyberpunk 2077 struggles to run on a base PS4 and Xbox One. You would have to think that the next Witcher game will be even bigger and more technically advanced than that, so will they ditch the PS4 and Xbox One and make the next game just for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC? I know that many still do not have a PS5 or Xbox Series console, but this game is still a long ways away and I would rather they just focus on the more powerful consoles.
Is The Game Further Away Than We Think?
I have to think that we will at the least get some kind of teaser announcement made for The Witcher 4 at some point in 2022. However, there is a big problem that CD Projekt Red are still dealing with right now and that is the disaster that was Cyberpunk 2077. To be fair they have done a ton of work to try and get this game to what they wanted it to be and as I write this the PS5 and Xbox Series versions of the game have just launched. However, you would have to assume that most of the staff have been hard at work on trying to get Cyberpunk 2077 to a state where people are happy with the game before they ask gamers to give them more money.
While I am very excited for The Witcher 4, or whatever it ends up being called and I am sure it will sell millions of copies. Heck, thanks to the Netflix TV show, you could argue that the series has never been bigger than it is now! However, CD Projekt Red has to get this game right, Cyberpunk 2077 was a buggy mess and should not have been released the way it was! They are still working on it now, over a year after it launched. The Witcher 4 needs to come out swinging and actually be playable and “finished” when it lands on store shelves.
- More Witcher is always a good thing
