Touken Ranbu Warriors

Touken Ranbu Warriors is an approachable game designed to give newcomers the chance to break into the long running series. This game helps explain some of the lore of past games in a new and exciting game that will entertain both new and old players alike. In this game, you are appointed by the ‘Time Government’ to stop villains from changing history to something they find more palatable.

Battles are too easy

Although the game is likely meant to be an entry to the series for new players, it offers little else to fans of the series. In the past, people who played a Touken Ranbu game had personable villains to fight, or dialogue from the various characters to help drive the story.

Not only does this version of the game have little in the way of content for seasoned players, even new players may find it a bit boring with how apathetic the villains are.

On easy mode, you can literally stand there and the opposition will only occasionally come up to give your character a poke or two. This relatively gentle approach to the game continues through the entire thing. If you’ve ever played Dynasty Warriors 9 or a similar game, you may be a bit disappointed in this latest offering.

So-so graphics

The graphics in Touken Ranbu Warriors are decent, but not anything that will blow your mind or leave you talking about it excitedly with your friends. With so many games out there that have stunning graphics, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Elden Ring, the graphics can look outright simple, but they’re still not bad.

There is a neat little animation that happens in this game worth noting. If you take a certain amount of damage, your clothing will shred in a cutscene that is worth watching. It’s a small aspect of the game, but unique.

Good for Lore

For those who are fans of the series and want more in-depth lore, this game does offer some enjoyable content. All of the different characters are human versions of famous Japanese swords of the past. The game gives them detailed characteristics of these swords, and also places the game in rich historical settings. The game spends most of its time in the past with only a clue here and there as to where you will be going in the future, but it’s still engaging if you want strictly fan-service from your game.

If you’re new to this genre, Touken Rambu is a nice game to dip your toe in the water. It features simple game play, lots of fan service for lovers of the series, and a relatively bug free experience. If you’re looking for a challenging game or to be shaken by the game’s innovation, you’ll be disappointed.
