Gear up for UnMetal. Take control of Jesse Fox, a soldier locked up in a covert military base, arrested for a crime he didn’t commit. Sneak through enemy territory and devastate them with bizarre techniques that you make up along the way. If you are looking for a game that pushes the envelope, really works in the humor and tries to reinvent an old genre in a way never seen before, then you are going to love this.

Gameplay

This game looks to be the unholy hybrid of Metal Gear Solid and Hotline Miami. A fantastic blend of minimalist combat, item management and comedy, this game really tries to be something unique. You sneak around, kick guards in the face, craft things using Jesse’s chemistry skills and engage in some of the most bizarre gameplay surrounding those things.

There are a handful of things about this game that you need to see to understand. For instance, if you see a guard who is sneezing, don’t go within the area of effect around him because if you do, Jesse will instinctively say “bless you” as a response. This will cause you to be seen by the guard and you have to figure out what to do after that. This game is filled to the brim with humorous encounters that really make you think.

That being said, it isn’t all humor, there is an aspect of skill involved here. While you fight a tank with a missile launcher, you will have to evade tank rounds or enemy bullets or killer assassin rats.

Humor

The humor in this game appears to be one of its greatest selling points. Jam packed full of puns, sight gags and nonsensical jokes, you’ll need to decipher a bunch of culture, gaming and movie references scattered all throughout the game. The more media you consume the more you’ll find in this game to tickle your funny bone. At several times throughout the game, I found myself laughing out loud and that is not something I do often. I truly enjoyed this games humor and found myself wanting to explore and interact with as many things as possible so I could hear everything they had to say.

Art Style

As I said earlier, the arts style is similar to Escape from Monkey Island or Yes, Your Grace. Games that have a pixelated texture to everything but still manage to find a way to make it all easy to understand. The action is clear to follow, your never stuck trying to figure out what you’re looking at and that’s a skill this developer has mastered. It’s a charming aesthetic that really works for the game and I found to be quite brilliant.
