Today we are taking a look at Vigil: The Longest Night which is a fantastic Metroidvania style of game. I am going to make a bold statement here and say that it is actually one of the best Metroidvania style games I have played in quite some time. I am actually scratching my head trying to think of any aspects of the game that I did not like, it was really that good! If you like these types of games, keep on reading to see what makes this one so special.
As Darkness Spreads Across The Land
In Vigil: The Longest Night we play as a powerful and badass heroine called Leila. Leila has completed her training to be part of this order and she is heading back to her hometown. Once she arrives, she finds out that two girls have gone missing.
She sets out to find them and ends up on an epic quest to stop the forces of evil from taking over. It has a very gothic feel to the story and I love it, it is very well done and I found myself actually interested in what was going on.
Video Games Are Art
This is one of the most gorgeous games of this style that I have ever played. Vigil: The Longest Night captures that dark and gothic style so very well. It looks like a darker Castlevania game and the art here is truly amazing. I love it when you are near a waterfall as the water effects are amazing. I think this is actually one of my favorite looking 2D games. While it is a 2D game there is some fantastic parallax scrolling and 3D character models that really do make this world come to life.
Slice And Move!
Combat is incredibly satisfying, but also very challenging. You cannot just run up to an enemy and start hitting them. Ok, so sometimes that does work, but most of the time you need a bit of finesse. You need to time your attacks in Vigil: The Longest Night, watch what they are doing, and look for the right moments to strike. It is very satisfying once it all clicks and you can dish out amazing combos and switch out weapons on the fly. I will admit that I did have to put the game on easy, but once I got the hang of it, I cranked the difficulty back up and found it to be much more rewarding. You can also get magic attacks and things like rings and wears to help you as well.
Skill Trees For All
There are skill trees for all of the weapons in Vigil: The Longest Night. You need to find the right resources on your travels and then once you find a blacksmith, you can upgrade your weapons. You can also upgrade your health and stamina too as they also have skill trees. The stamina system is the one thing I am not a massive fan of as I feel it does drain a little fast. It may seem like far too many skill trees to keep track of, but with exploration, you can find tons of resources.
I had such a great time playing through Vigil: The Longest Night the first time, that I started a second playthrough as soon as I was done. Not many games have this effect on me, but this one did.
The story is good, but it is the way that game plays that hooked me. It just feels great, yes you will die, yes you will have to backtrack a lot and yes sometimes, you will wonder where the heck you are supposed to go. That is to be expected in games like this and none of it ever felt like a chore to me. If you like MetroidVania games, then you will love this as it is one of the best around!
