Chrono Sword

I know, you saw the title Chrono Sword and you thought this was going to be a sequel to the SNES (or to a lesser extent the PlayStation) classic. Well, while this is its own game, it has time travel elements and I think it sounds like a fantastic action RPG that is going to have an engaging plot and some very rewarding combat. As I write this the game has been in development for quite a while, but things do look like they are moving along quickly now so I thought it was the perfect time to talk about this game.

Back In Time!

In any kind of media when people tinker with time travel does it ever pan out good? Well, in Hot Tub Time Machine it does, but in most circumstances such as Chrono Sword here, it goes quite badly.

Our main character is a female character called Aenor and she is a time traveler. She goes back into the past and encounters a young girl called, Glendyn. What is interesting about this is that Glendyn is actually Aenor’s mentor. This meeting causes a ripple effect that destroys Aenor’s present! She will have to travel back and forth through time to set things right that once went wrong! Kind of like in Quantum Leap!

Creating The Right Atmosphere

Chrono Sword is made with some very stylish pixel art that is complimented very well with some amazing use of lighting. I really like the world that they have created here and the characters have some fantastic portrait artwork. This will appear during story scenes and when you get to make various dialogue choices as you progress through the game.

Two Interesting Comparisons

One of the things that made me take notice of this game, apart from the interesting time travel themed story was how the developer described the combat. Look, we have all heard a ton of times a developer say that their game is “Souls like” when it comes to the combat and that is part of what they say about Chrono Sword. However, they also say that The Last of Us with its kind of QTE and environmental combat was an inspiration too. That sounds very interesting and is sure to make the whole cycle of attack, dodge, and shield that little bit more complex and engaging.

The Time Traveler’s Mentor

My wife would be so proud of that reference I just did. As this is a game that is about time travel, you will have to do a lot of exploration. You can be in the present, the side, which is kind of like an alternate present depending on what you did and you can also go to the past.

The game is designed with being non-linear in mind and that to me, mixed with the time travel aspect sounds very interesting. I just hope it does not turn into a where the hell am I supposed to go kind of game!

I think that Chrono Sword is looking very, very interesting. It has been in development for a while, but it is a Kickstarter success and as I write this from what I can tell, the game is very close to being completed. This is a game that is going to be available for pretty much everything. If you like action RPGs and enjoy interesting, deep, and sci-fi based stories, be sure to give this game a look to see if it is for you.

Pros:

  • I love the time travel aspect of the story
  • Time travel is also a big part of the gameplay
  • I like how they are using The Last of Us and the Souls games as inspiration
  • Combat looks deep, fun, and satisfying (that is what she said)

Cons:

  • I do worry if exploration will be harder than it needs to be
  • Sometimes stories about time travel can be hard to follow
