Zombies? Check. Lots of Zombies? Arguably too many zombies? Check. If you are looking for a horde style zombie game where you can blast away with high powered weapons at thousands of the undead, then this is without a doubt the game for you. World War Z by Saber Interactive is a triumph in horde mechanics that make for a truly exhilarating and very freaky experience.
Designed like the unholy lovechild of Left 4 Dead and Days Gone, World War Z brings in some brilliant horde mechanics where you can be facing off against hundreds of zombies who all come to rush you at once. It’s a third-person shooter but you need to be able to think on your feet as you get from A to B with some stellar gameplay.
Movement controls are great, combat mechanics are tight and well-designed; this tied with the multiplayer aspect, you’ve got yourself a brilliant little game with hours of scary enjoyment waiting.
Thankfully, its not simply a case of escaping zombies with whatever guns you can get, there are loadouts and 7 different classes to choose from. Ranging from the Slasher who specialises in melee to the Exterminator who specialises in crowd control, you have a fair amount of freedom to explore your playstyle and find a way to play that suits you.
This game is unmistakeably stylish and it looks really nice throughout. Going for a third-person camera, the game gives you a nice amount of special awareness so that you can truly take in your environment and the zombies that fill it. There’s a lot here that really makes the game great and helps the panic to set in. Something that I found really cool is the horde mechanics, there can be hundreds of zombies on screen at a time and they all swarm like waves of the ocean to eat your face, unlike the ocean.
You can see them all running, stumbling over each other, they can stack up and climb other zombies to reach higher areas and they can also climb walls. The worst part is that these aren’t Romero Zombies, these are “Runners;” the kind that sprint for you and try to munch your brain with haste. Interestingly, there are a few different types of zombies for you to encounter, from screamers that summon other zombies to heavies that are a lot harder for you to kill.
The crucial aspect of games like this, something that can and did, bring it over to a whole new level of brilliance; multiplayer. This is a game that you want your friends with you for, when you’re staring down the hordes, having your pals by your side makes for a truly frightening but hilarious endeavour.
This is a truly solid game with some great mechanics, I had a great time playing it and I know that you will to. I hope you like zombies.
