Today we are checking out WWE 2K14 which was the first WWE game brought to us by 2K. I was very interested to see how this one would play out. THQ went out with a bang with WWE 13 which was one of my favorite WWE games thanks to the amazing Attitude Era mode. With this game, once again they looked to the WWE’s epic past, but as well as this there was more than enough for the modern fan too.
30 Years Of WrestleMania
The year WWE 2K14 was released, WWE celebrated 30 years of WrestleMania with WrestleMania XXX. As it was the 30th anniversary, the main game mode of this year's game reflects that. You have five different chapters to play through which are. Hulkamania Runs Wild, The New Generation, The Attitude Era, Ruthless Aggression, and The Universe Era.
Each chapter features classic WrestleMania moments to play through such as Hulk Hogan’s classic matches, Bret Hart, and Shawn Michaels's rise during the New Generation Era. The Attitude Era mode features stars like The Rock and Steve Austin. John Cena leads the charge in Ruthless Aggression and the current stars of today are what The Universe Era is about. There truly is something for every fan in this game mode.
But Wait, There’s More!
As well as the awesome 30 Years Of WrestleMania mode, WWE 2K14 also had other game modes to enjoy. You had a new Streak Mode where you can either play as The Undertaker as you try and defend your epic WrestleMania streak. Or you can play as another wrestler as you try and break the Dead Man’s iconic streak. There is also WWE Universe Mode which allows you to try your hand at running the WWE anyway that you see fit.
Lightning Like Quick
While over the last few years, the WWE 2K series has just gotten staler and staler in terms of the gameplay. In WWE 2K14 things were actually looking quite good. The gameplay had been kicked up a notch from WWE 13 and as a result, things were much more fluid and faster. It made for an overall more fun and quicker experience that especially came true when you were playing with a friend.
What The World Is Watching
They managed to keep everything that made WWE 13 great intact here when it comes to virtually recreating the WWE. It is stacked with match types which is always great. It features a massive roster and thanks to the 30 Years Of WrestleMania mode, the roster is stacked with legends from all eras. Look, I get why people would love this, but I have to be honest and say that I do slightly prefer the more focused roster from WWE 13.
The create a wrestler mode is back and while at first, it looks the same as the previous year. You now have 100-character slots to use and the way they let you use an actual WWE superstar as a template is cool. Not to mention, you can also download and use other people’s creations too, well you used to be able to, I would assume the servers are long closed.
When WWE 2K14 was released I was very excited and thought that 2K getting the WWE license was a step in the right direction for the WWE. This is a fantastic wrestling game and one that I can happily go back and play to this day thanks to the nostalgia of the main game mode. Truth be told, this is actually a lot of fun to play and I liked the quicker pace of the in-ring action that the game provided.
- The 30 Years of WrestleMania mode is epic
- It has a massive roster of legends from every era
- The Streak Mode is a lot of fun
- WWE Universe Mode lets you try running the WWE!
- Some of the character models look better than others
- Commentary is very annoying and repetitive
