In recent years we've seen a lot of game genres gain a lot of popularity, some of them unexpectedly. One of the biggest in growth is also one that’s fairly new, as the game that originated this type of game is just a little over a decade old. If you haven’t guessed it by now, we’re talking about what we call “soulslike”. These games are crazy popular now, so it is natural that developers want a piece of that cake too. Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is a game developed by Acme Gamestudio and tinyBuild, and it’s one of the “soulslike” games we’re talking about, and it combines those elements with more RPG-oriented ones. But what is this game all about? Well, let’s talk about it!
About the game
In Asterigos: Curse of the Stars we play the role of Hilda, a young warrior of the Septentrional Wind, she has embarked on a journey to a damned city in order to save her missing father. We get to explore the beautiful city of Aphes as we fight through the hordes of furious enemies and mythical bosses that are trying to stop us from finding the truth.
The decisions you make as Hilda will have great effects in the outcome of the story and the destiny of the city of Aphes. The combat system is really deep and satisfying, giving you many ways to beat your enemies. Your weapons can be upgraded with runes found throughout the world, and there are even items and skills you can find in chests and dungeons that will help you discover new secrets.
The landscapes of Aphes are full of beauty and danger: from the fog-covered bazaar streets to the gloomy sewers and from the enigmatic forests on the outskirts of the city to the abysses filled with glittering crystals. The city structures are inspired by ancient Greece buildings, but also the entire mythology and story are inspired by greek mythos. There are heroes and monsters, gods and demigods, magic, and technology. All these things combined give an epic experience.
An epic journey
One thing that's really clear from the beginning in Asterigos: Curse of the Stars is that when you get into the game you're in for an adventure. The visuals and the designs are incredible in this game, not to mention that the enemies and world-building are heavily inspired by greek mythology in an incredible mix of modern and classic art.
Now, remember how we mentioned that this game belongs in the sub-genre we call "soulslike"? Well, this term comes from the Dark Souls game series, but when it comes to the first souls' games like the first Dark Souls of series, the plot and story were not clearly shown. It was more something you had to discover for yourself by putting together all the dots scattered around. Asterigos: Curse of the Stars presents a clear contrast to that type of narrative by giving you the story directly as a narrative, full of dialogues and more.
