Beyond Good & Evil 2
Beyond Good and Evil 2 is one of those games we've all heard of, but not many people know much about it. Back in 2003, Ubisoft released the first Beyond good and evil, an action-adventure game for the Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, PC and Xbox. It would later on get an HD re-release for the PS3 and Xbox 360. And for many years we've been waiting to see what comes next after that. The first title was a success with the critics, but it sure wasn't as successful with the audience. Even so, the game has become a cult classic over the years, and in 2008 a sequel was announced, so… what happened?
Expect, but don't wait
Beyond Good and Evil 2 has been for many years in a constant limbo of development. Since the original announcement in 2008, there was not much to be seen for almost a decade. Back then in the original announcement, they showed very little. A few "in-engine" shots with no action nor story.
But even back then, game designer and director Michael Ancel stated that the game was already in a "post-production state" and waiting for Ubisoft's approval. Without a release date announced they buried the project for almost a decade after that.
Even in 2009, Ancel stated that the game was still "in development" and later that same year a new leak appeared on the internet. It was some weird video footage later on confirmed to be real but not intended for release. And once again claiming there were still no plans for a release of the full game. In 2010 Ubisoft officially declared that the game's development stopped.
The constant back and forth of coming in and out of development and rumors were still around until 2017. When in the middle of Ubisoft's E3 presentation something nobody expected happened. A new trailer and new confirmation of Beyond Good and Evil 2 development appeared to brighten up the day
What we know so far
Yes, a new trailer full of new art, new designs and much more was revealed that day, but one very important detail was missing from the announcement. You guessed it, we still don't have the slightest idea of the release date. The trailer did show much more advanced graphics and a more ambitious world than in the previous game, obviously. According to Cancel the game has been playable in many different prototypes, but none of them was up to the ideas they had in mind. They needed to take a break from that game and go back to more simple titles. But after that, they supposedly went back up to Beyond Good and Evil 2. However, one thing that strikes as good news is that finally, after more than a decade of waiting, they've released some gameplay footage. And if it does deliver to what they claim the game will be, it seems to be worth the wait.
So, let's round things up one last time then
- The game is not a direct sequel, but more of a prequel
- It takes place in the XXIV century, about "a generation before" Jade and Pey'j appeared
- It features a brand new game engine
- Open world adventure with space and interplanetary exploration
- It will have strong online features, constant online required is highly possible
- You play as a customizable pirate captain and own over one space ship as you progress
- Likely to be released for next-generation consoles
- Release date still unknown
