Howdy cowpokes, today we are heading down to the old Blood West in a wicked, wicked wild, wild west kind of first-person shooter! Man, that was quite the opening line, wasn’t it? There are many games that have been set in the old west and there are also many supernatural style games too, but very rarely do the two cross paths. It is a real shame too because most of the time that it does happen, it is always a great deal of fun! Today I want to share my thoughts on this awesome looking first-person shooter.
Lay My Bones To Rest
I just love the whole style of Blood West and think that what they are going for here is really awesome. We play as an old cowboy who is dead, but as his body has not been laid to rest, he has not moved onto the afterlife. This is a good thing as the old west is under a curse and all manner of nasty creatures are roaming the land.
As your old bones are not laid to rest just yet, you grab your shotgun and try to free the west of this evil curse. This to me is just awesome stuff and reminds me of games like the criminally underrated Dark Watch and Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare.
The Dead Can Still Die
With such an epic storyline and a brooding atmosphere full of evil creatures, you would think that Blood West would be all about balls to the wall action! However, the developers state that this is a stealth based first-person shooter, but from what I have seen you are free to go about this game any way you want. The combat is designed to be challenging so do not be surprised if enemies do not just drop with one hit when you run in guns a blazing! You may have to be a tad more cerebral with how you go about things here. There are different traits that you can earn/improve as you play so there is some good progression to the gameplay here too.
Time On The Red Ring Of Death Ranch
Visually, I love the whole style that they have gone for here with Blood West. My dad used to watch Westerns all the time so it is something I always get a kick out of in video games. From old west whore houses, towns, the plains, and every other wild west cliché you could think of, it is all here, but with a dark and twisted kind of style to it. The visuals do have a kind of “older” look about them.
I am not saying they are bad or anything like that, but the game does have a kind of Xbox 360 style to it in terms of the way things look, but that is not meant as a criticism, I like the artistic direction that they have taken here.
I think that Blood West is shaping up to be something that is very cool. I do not think this is the only wild west themed first-person shooter that is being released in 2022, but it does appear to be the first one. I think that this looks like a ton of fun and if you have an interest in stuff like this then you have to add this one to your watch list.
- The wild west setting is awesome
- I like the dark and twisted tale they are telling here
- The first-person shooter combat is designed to be challenging
- There looks to be some very good progression to the gameplay
- It might not be the undead blast fest that people are expecting
- The “dated” kind of look to the visuals might not appeal to everyone
