Now I hope you like horror puzzle platformers because here is Broken Veil by Sinistrum Games. This is looking to a real freaky customer so put on a fresh pair of undies when you dive into this nonsense, it could leave you wondering a little longer about what just went bump in the dark. Prepare for some Russian inspired world design with a genuinely scary twist.
Gameplay
So, if you’ve seen any of the marketing material for this game, you’ll know that it looks pretty scary. Taking some inspiration from games like Inside, Limbo and Little Nightmares, we have another serious contented for freakiest game containing child protagonists.
It appears that a lot of your objectives revolve around solving small platform-based puzzles and escaping from something or somewhere, what those things are have not yet been confirmed.
You can control cats with a laser pointer in this game. I’m not saying it’s the best mechanic in the world but its up there as pretty dang perfect.
Story
The objective of the game has been revealed in that the child the player controls is that of attempting to find his mother. There is a very real possibility that this is going to wind up as one of the games where the main character is just frightened and thus making a lot of what it sees up, or perhaps adjusting things to match a scared ‘perceived reality’ that is actually very far from real; like Sea of Solitude.
There’s also the distinct possibility that everything is exactly as horrible as it all looks and the character actually inhabits some form of hellish otherworld where everything is terrible.
Art Style
This game has a clear, unique and pretty scary art style. Something that is truly brilliant are the monster/character designs; from multi-legged spider people to faceless abominations that stalk the alleyways looking for you, there is a clear and considerable amount of effort that has been put into creating this title.
Conclusion
Sometimes you’ll be walking around and then all of a sudden, arms made from darkness will start reaching out for you. Everything is a creative choice, from the color scheme to the distinctly 90’s Russia world design, that sells the atmosphere and, plot twist, that atmosphere is freaky as heck.
*This could take its place at the pinnacle of creepy, third person, puzzle platformer horror games that challenge the way we think and introduce an interesting concept that ultimately teaches us some kind of lesson. I truly hope that it is. *
Pros:
- Interesting world choice
- Excellently terrifying atmosphere
- Brilliant character design
Cons:
- Could completely miss the mark and not be scary
- Looks slightly derivative
