The idea of a portable fighting game packed with explosive action and familiar characters always seems good. That's why Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion exists, to be your go-to handheld fighter with all your favorite Saturday morning characters. The only issue is that games under this television station's brand have not had the best reputation, mainly for their lack of quality.

But we're always willing to give a brawler a try. One that features the possibility of Johnny Bravo and Mojo Jojo squaring up with each other in Dexter's Lab. So let's dive into Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosions, a game that theoretically should be enticing, but in practice, we expect to fall flat on its face.

Get Outta My Cartoons!

Much like any all-star brawler, Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion shares a ludicrous plot that players will barely notice throughout gameplay. A TV announcer has taken a day off and watched some cartoons. Some mysterious evil force has invaded the channel, preventing the shows from airing. Naturally, it's up to all the characters on the network to jump in and save the day.

So how's the gameplay? We've got 18 playable characters across a range of Cartoon Network shows, each with its own set of moves. There are 21 stages with their standard setups from the cartoon locations. Mechanics consist of pulling off your skillsets to eliminate your opponent. It sounds precisely like an all-star brawler should be.

The problem with Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion is it continues to follow the same formula as any other branded game. It offers the bare minimum of the genre, painting the game pretty with the colorful aesthetics of the cartoons. In this case, the move sets are bland, the objectives could be more exciting, and the combat could be more inspired, but the locations certainly look great.

Again, we face the same standards as every other Cartoon Network game. We can't say we're surprised, but again, disappointed with how much potential a game featuring classic cartoon characters could do. So somehow, these games must meet developer targets internally, with us continuing to get titles like this because they are average at best for the players.

Wet Fuse

Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion is hardly the brawler boom we would want from a concept with so much potential. It only feels like the publishers told the developers to make Super Smash Bros. Melee with the network's characters. Still, they had to deliver a finished title next week. That would explain the lackluster yet polished stature of the final game.

Let's not ransack the game completely, as there are enjoyable moments. Combat with Saturday morning cartoon characters hits those nostalgia notes, and the challenges are sometimes entertaining. However, because of the lack of variation, it will only be a little while before the game becomes dry.

Round-Up - Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Visually appealing syncing CN characters and locations into the game
  • It will feel nostalgic to play as some of the characters
  • A fair amount of content is available

Cons:

  • Not much variation between characters' unique moves
  • The gameplay becomes bland after a few stages
  • The story is cringeworthy
