Cats and the Other Lives

As a cat lover, Cats and the Other Lives appealed to me at first because it let us play as a cat. However, the more I looked into this game, the more I realized that what we had here was something that is truly special and quite unique. This is a classic point-and-click adventure-style game that has some gorgeous pixel art and an engaging story that takes you through many different years. This is one of those games that I feel you have to play to really get an appreciation for just how special it is.

Through The Eyes Of A Cat

The plot of Cats and the Other Lives revolves around the Mason family. The patriarch of the family Bernard has passed away in the large and pretty creepy Mason Mansion. This brings the extended Mason family back to the mansion and we get to experience the lives of these people. However, the twist here is that we are seeing all of this unfold through the eyes of the pet cat, Aspen.

A Bit Of Mystery About It!

What we basically have here is a mystery story as we find out all of the ins and outs of the Mason family. Cats and the Other Lives is an incredible story driven and one thing that is cool about it is that while we get to see the lives, thoughts, dreams, failures, and so on of the Mason family that has returned home. We also through ghosts get to see the stories of past family members as well. It is hard to explain and it makes this a story that gets its hooks into you and never let's go. It is great stuff and the kind of thing that I just love in my games.

The Creepy Mason Mansion

It is impossible not to be impressed by the visuals of Cats and the Other Lives. I am a huge fan of pixel art and the pixel art here is some of the best that I have seen this year. The actual mansion has a very creepy and almost macabre look to it that I just fell in love with right away. As well as the pixel art looking great, what really brings this story to life is the fantastic animation and the incredible lighting effects that are used. Some games that use pixel art have a 16-bit vibe about them. That is not the case here, this despite having a “retro” look, makes use of some clever modern techniques to make the whole thing look as good as possible.

The Life Of A Cat

I said in the intro that the gameplay of Cats and the Other Lives is that of a point-and-click style adventure. You will be going all around the house, discovering secrets, finding items, and so on. What I thought was pretty neat was the fact that we are playing as a fairly ordinary cat for the most part. This can just do what a regular cat can do and that makes for some interesting gameplay. One of the things that I thought was a neat touch was how you could track people around the mansion via their scent.

I am having a tough time right now thinking of a game that has surprised me in 2022 as much as Cats and the Other Lives. I have always enjoyed this style of game, ever since the days of playing Monkey Island on the Amiga. I think what they have done here with this game is very impressive. I am in love with the tale of the Manson Family, their history, and the strange things surrounding them. Plus, the fact we get to play as a cat and that is such a huge part of the way that the game plays is something I think is very cool.

Pros:

  • We get to play as an average house cat
  • The Manson Family is very interesting
  • I love how the story unfolds over so many years
  • The point-and-click style gameplay is very fun

Cons:

  • Some of the puzzles are a bit on the cryptic side
  • I wish the game had some voice acting that would have made the story even more special
