Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient is a japanese story game that continues the Corpse Party series. Although it was originally released in 2013, the game was received as a buggy mess, which prompted the developer GrindHouse to recode and remake Corpse Party 2 completely in 2019.

Fans of anime/manga narrative games will love Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient, and gamers who enjoyed the other entries in the series Blood Covered, Book of Shadows, or Blood Drive, will surely want to check this one out too.

Part-y of the Story

Of course, fans of the original Corpse Party will look forward to further exploring the series’ narrative. The events of Corpse Party 2 take place 5 years after Corpse Party: Blood Drive. But rather than stepping back into the spooky halls of Heaven Host Elementary, this entry into the series takes place in the medically terrifying Amare Patriarcha Crucis Hospital.

Fans of the original game will appreciate the relevance of Crucis Hospital, as the location was hinted at by Naho Saenoki in the first entry of the series. However, fans shouldn’t expect to be revisiting their old favourites. While there are a couple of camoes from fan favourites, Corpse Party 2 deals with an entirely new cast of characters.

Creeps and Questions

The gameplay for Dead Patient is a mix of exploration and puzzle solving. It’s up to players to control the game’s protagonist Ayame, a cute chibi female character, through the desolate and dank halls of Crucis Hospital.

Notably, the control system allows for smooth movement of Ayame, giving players an omni-directional control scheme. This is highly beneficial due to the game’s emphasis on exploration and evasion from its many enemies. That said, it’s not all just running away from baddies, as the game also forces players to fight against baddies with a selection of weapons you find within the hospital.

Speaking of finding weapons, Dead Patient involves an inventory and item system for keeping track of whatever you might collect during your playthrough. Hidden throughout the creepy hospital are glowing items, such as weapons. Players can easily equip and unequip items and weapons on the go, meaning that the flow of gameplay is never interrupted in the middle of a tense situated by clunky or cumbersome UI.

While the game also focuses on puzzles, only a handful are particularly tricky, meaning that the difficulty of entry to Corpse Party 2 is relatively low.

Get the Party Started

Evolving from the original’s spooky elementary school premise, Dead Patient sees the protagonist Ayame Itou wake up in an abandoned hospital. Tied to an operating table, Ayame has no memory of how she ended up in such a terrifying place. Eventually escaping from her constraints, it's up to Ayame to discover what exactly happened in Crucis Hospital.

Like the previous entries of Corpse Party, part of the charm comes from the contrast between scary horror and cute chibi characters. There are plenty of disturbing and unsettling scenes that touch on psychological, body and supernatural horror, and the game has a surprising restraint when it comes to jump scares, opting for a moodier and atmospheric approach rather than cheap loud noises.

6

All in all, Dead Patient is a short, but deep dive into the themes of terror, desperation, and fear. While the total runtime isn’t a marathon by any means, and the series shows no signs of being continued, Dead Patient is an excellent look at what developer GrindHouse could have achieved.
