Dragon Quest Treasures

I was kind of surprised when we saw the first trailer for Dragon Quest Treasures as it seemed like it was aiming to be more of a spin-off from the long running RPG series. However, I feel that there are far more similarities here with the old school Dragon Quest games than people may think. I managed to get the chance to spend quite a bit of time with the game and wanted to share my thoughts, but please note the version of the game I got the chance to play was not the final build of the game.

I Am Sure That I Have Seen You Before!

The two main characters in Dragon Quest Treasures are the siblings from Dragon Quest 11, Erik and Mia. From what I experienced, there was no character customization here! Anyway, if you have played Dragon Quest 11, you will probably get a kick out of seeing the heroes from that game in a much younger form. They do not have dreams of saving the world, instead, they want to get rich and be the best treasure hunters. They sneak off their ship, but disaster strikes as they crash land on a mysterious island and end up transported to a weird dimension! They end up getting the chance to prove their worth as treasure hunters, but they also get the chance to become heroes as well.

Just Let Me Play

I think that there are some neat ideas with Dragon Quest Treasures, but the game design feels like something that would have been on the PlayStation 2. This is a very slow to start game as you are forced to sit through long winded tutorials with no option to skip them! The core gameplay is great, but getting to it will test your patience. Most of what you will be doing is taking on a quest, finding the treasure, taking it back, and then heading out on another adventure. I know that it sounds simple, but completing quests, getting loot, and improving your base and gear becomes very addictive.

Monster Party!

No that is not a reference to the NES classic, although it could be! Dragon Quest Treasures features a really fun combat system. You play as your chosen sibling, but what makes up the rest of your party are the monsters that join you as you progress through the game. This is such a fun idea and in typical Dragon Quest fashion, the monsters in the game have a ton of personality. There is a bit of strategy to the combat, but this is one part of the game where I found that it was very easy to figure out what you need to do.

Dragon Quest Saturday Moring Special

While I found the story to be long winded, Dragon Quest Treasures is a game that I am a huge fan of the visuals of! It has that classic Dragon Quest look about it, but there is just something a bit more “cutesy” going on here that I really do like. I truly think that this is perhaps what a cartoon version of this iconic series could look like!

Pros:

• I like how we play as the characters from Dragon Quest 11
• The combat system here is a lot of fun
• The treasure and loot focus of the gameplay is very addictive
• I think that the presentation is very charming

Cons:

• The story is very long winded, especially at the start
• I hate how slow paced the forced tutorials are!
