Koei used to be one of the biggest game developers in all Japan and one of the most successful ones too. Their Dynasty Warriors franchise quickly rose to success to the point where they released about 4 games in just a couple of years. Of course, this also includes the Xtreme Legends, which are basically additions and little variants here and there. We'll talk about Dynasty Warriors 5 Xtreme Legends here, released in 2005 as a PS2 exclusive. And to do this we'll also talk about the basic version of the game to put you in context. Keep in mind that games like Samurai Warrior were released just a year before, so Dynasty Warriors had to do something new here to survive.
Dynasty Warriors 5 includes 48 characters from which you’re only getting about 15 to start off the story while the rest of them will be progressively unlocked. As we finish the main story with different characters and armies, more stories will unlock, and all these extra characters get their turn into the musou battlefield.
This time we get to explore deeper into each of the main characters' sides of the story in depth. This helps to diversify the story, the narrative, and the general way in which the game progresses. And of course, it also helps to make this one different from past titles. It's a mechanic the successor games in the series would keep using, thus expanding each of the character's stories more and more.
Xtreme Legends specials
The additions in Dynasty Warriors 5 Xtreme Legends include the same Legend mode we've seen in the past Xtreme Legends version of Dynasty Warriors 4. This allows us to choose not of the 48 generals available in the game and fulfill missions on of the eighteen new levels added into the game. These are extra missions that leave the main argument and plot of the game behind and opt for an alternate story. These missions can get really tough, but they are super addictive and force you to take your game to the next level.
But speaking of tough missions, there's also the Xtreme mode, that will take the musou experience and make it more, as the name implies, extreme. YOu can choose out of three generals or create your own, and then you're thrown into the battlefield. This is a survival mode where your abilities will be tested to the limits, no checkpoints, and no time to rest. Get the objectives done and make sure to survive
Dynasty Warriors 5 is a solid game for the franchise, while the evolution in the graphics isn't too notable, they are still great. The gameplay has improved just a bit, but sadly it still gets a little repetitive. Now, when you add the Xtreme Legends expansion, you get to spice things up a bit.
Dynasty Warriors 5 Xtreme Legends adds a lot of replay value into the game, making it more fun and durable. It is excellent for the player that thinks the game is still too easy and is looking for more of a challenge.
The narrative in Dynasty Warriors 5 is great and this is one of the things they really improved over the last one. There are even more enemies on screen and the attacks look more fluid, as well as the character models are less stiff. Combine it with the Xtreme Legends expansion and you’re easily in front of the best game in the series up to that point.
- Great learning curve
- Tons of characters
- Improvement in narrative
- NIce additions
- Can get repetitive
- It’s still too similar to what we’ve seen
