I think that Finnish Army Simulator might be one of the strangest games that I have ever played. Now, there is nothing too weird about the actual game, but more the fact that someone felt that this game needed to be made. However, even with that being said, the more I read about this game, the more fascinated by it I became. So fascinated that I am sharing my thoughts about it with you today! Keep on reading if you have ever wondered what it would be like to be in the Finnish Army!
Just Like You Remember
I got a huge kick out of the way that Finnish Army Simulator is described over on Steam. This is apparently just like the Finnish army service you remember if you were in it or if you were not, you will feel like you were. To say that this is a game that has its tongue firmly in its cheek is a massive understatement. The idea of the game is that you are in the army and you are just trying to do your time until your discharge date arrives.
Inspired By The Greats
One of the things that really appealed to me about Finnish Army Simulator was the way that the developer’s name dropped games like Track and Field and Tony Hawk, two series of games that I am a huge fan of. What they were getting at here is that this game will have a real pick up and play feel about it. Each day, you are tasked with doing things like your standard training, getting to grips with guns, talking to others, and so on. It is all done with a kind of black humor that is something I get a huge kick out of.
Going Deeper Underground!
No, we are not quoting the epic Jamiroquai song from the less than epic Godzilla movie from the late 90s! Nor are we suggesting that you should go AWOL as you play Finnish Army Simulator. What we are talking about here is the fact that this game has way more deeper game mechanics than you would think. Even though as I write this, the game is not yet complete, we can already see that it has RPG mechanics such as grinding and leveling up as well as a skill tree and some interesting mini-games and QTE style events. Plus, there is a dialogue system at play where you can communicate with others.
Casting Your Dreams Away
They have said that the setting of the game is around 2011, I am not sure why exactly Finnish Army Simulator is set during this specific time, but it does add to the whole quirky nature of the game and that is something I am more than ok with. The presentation of the game is not exactly AAA, but again, it adds to the charm the game has. It actually reminds me of a Sega Dreamcast game or even a game that would have been released on the PlayStation 2 or original Xbox in terms of its visuals.
Ok, I know that what we have here with Finnish Army Simulator is freaking weird, but that is actually one of the things that I really like about it. The game is basically you just trying to survive in the army, do your training, have fun, and ultimately get out in one piece. I know that this is a game many people will pass over. However, I think the whole strange nature of it and the quirky humor that it has will make this a real cult classic for some people.
Pros:
- I love how weird this game is
- The idea of trying to survive training in the Finnish Army is fun
- There is a lot of different gameplay mechanics here
- This is the kind of game that is fun to discuss with others
Cons:
- I would wager more people will not “get” this game than those that do
- I am not sure how much replay value something like this will have
