Let's just take a moment to appreciate what a great concept Firegirl: Hack 'n' Splash Rescue is. Despite the fact, the title sounds like an average video game offering of a Saturday morning cartoon, the reality is that it's far from that idea. It's a holistic platformer that shakes up the stereotypes of genre visuals and gameplay.
If you saw the announcement trailer of Firegirl: Hack 'n' Splash Rescue, you couldn't help but be impressed. The classic platformer paired with contemporary gameplay looked astounding. The trivial task of putting out fires has been turned on its head. At least we think so. We better play to see if it lives up to the standards set out by the first impressions.
Who Ya Gonna Call?
It would appear that Firegirl: Hack 'n' Splash Rescue would indeed live up to its expectations. The game is about a young firefighter just starting her career in the force, tasked with putting out the city's blazes whenever needed. Given her remarkable skill with using a fire hose and ax, you'd think she'd be blessed with firefighting superpowers.
Firegirl: Hack 'n' Splash Rescue isn't about roaming around and simple water fires. Each procedure generated blaze provides a unique obstacle to eliminating the flare. It's made even more challenging because you have to rescue as many civilians as possible. You aren't sure what you're going to get, so you'll have to use your cognitive skills to jetpack, hurdle, chop, and water your way over the fires.
Let's just talk about the visuals here. They are absolutely phenomenal. The gorgeous environments are brought to life in free-flowing 2.5D graphics, with each character contrasting being a 2D pixelated asset. The stunning aesthetic is never lost on anyone throughout the game and really brings excitement to life.
Firegirl: Hack 'n' Splash Rescue is a well-rounded platform that offers a lot of thrills and fun. It's a shame to say that it does get a little repetitive after a while. However, the repetitiveness is counterbalanced by the jaw-dropping presentation. What seemed like a trivial concept is brought to life with extraordinary flair.
This Girl is on Fire
Firegirl: Hack 'n' Splash Rescue could arguably join the ranks of Ori and the Blind Forest in terms of platformer innovation. They both offer a holistically creative perspective on the genre while rounding the game with some outstanding visuals. Honestly, the aesthetic of this game alone makes it worth playing.
But there is plenty to enjoy about the core gameplay despite the fact it does get repetitive. Building up the firehouse is an excellent addition to the game in parallel with the callouts to tackle the blazes. You'll always have enough to keep you entertained and justify the fact that Firegirl: Hack 'n' Splash Rescue is one of the better platformers lately.
