For The King II is the highly anticipated sequel to the popular roguelike RPG. Developed by IronOak Games and published by Curve Digital, For The King II builds upon the strong foundation of the original game while introducing a host of new features and refinements. Does the sequel live up to the royal pedigree of the original? Read on to find out.
About the game
For The King II returns players to the procedurally generated fantasy world of Fahrul. However, this time the land is under the oppressive rule of the once beloved Queen Rosomon. After turning against her people and allying with sinister forces, it's up to you and your party to end the Queen's tyrannical reign. Like its predecessor, For The King II blends roguelite elements with strategic, dice-based combat in a beautiful low-poly art style.
One of the biggest improvements in For The King II is the size and scope of the world. There are five unique regions to explore, each with their own distinct biomes, spanning over 30 hours of gameplay. From deep dark mines to lush forests and tropical seas filled with merlings, the diverse environments of Fahrul are a joy to discover. The procedurally generated maps also ensure no two playthroughs are ever the same.
Strategic, Dice-Based Combat
The turn-based combat builds upon the strong foundation of the original. Movement and positioning now play a bigger role with the introduction of the new Battle Grid system. Placing ranged characters in the back row or luring enemies into hazards like fire and poison add more depth and strategy to fights. The dice-roll mechanics also still ensure battles have an engaging randomness and unpredictability.
Through multiple playthroughs, you'll get better gear for your party, making them stronger for the next attempt when failure eventually comes. Overall, the combat strikes the perfect balance between strategic thinking and luck.
Up to four players can adventure together in local or online co-op. Playing solo, you control the full party but in co-op each player commands their own custom character. This opens up fun opportunities for strategy, teamwork and friendly competition between players. Couch co-op is also a fantastic option for gaming with friends or family. My only small complaint is that there are occasional moments during exploration where players end up waiting for others finishing shopping or conversations. However, the co-op experience overall is incredibly fun and adds tremendous replay value.
Review: 8.5/10
For The King II improves upon the original in almost every way. The expanded, vibrant world of Fahrul is a joy to journey through. The strategic, dice-based combat adds the perfect amount of thoughtful strategy and random excitement. Being able to adventure with three other players is also a fantastic addition. While the sequel still shares some repetitive elements with the first game, For The King II delivers a beefier, more polished experience that lives up to the royal legacy. I give this worthy sequel a 8.5 out of 10 score.
For fans of strategic RPGs and roguelites, For The King II is easy to recommend, whether playing solo or with friends. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to gather my party and venture forth on another royal quest through the wondrous and deadly realm of Fahrul.
Pros:
- Vastly expanded world with diverse regions
- Refined, strategic combat system
- Engaging four-player online and local co-op
Cons:
- Some repetitive elements remain from the first game
- Occasional down time during co-op exploration
