Dungeons of Aether

Dungeons of Aether is a tremendous rogue like dungeon crawler that is part of this series. Whereas the first game was a kind of smash fighting clone, this one is dramatically changing up the gameplay style for something quite unique and fun. This is a very challenging game and one that I feel when it gets its hooks into you will become something that is very addictive. Today, I am taking a closer look at this game to share with you why I am so excited about it.

A Challenging Adventure For All

There is a story mode in Dungeons of Aether and I feel that is where you need to start as it will ease you into things. The setting of the game is a steampunk style place called, Julesvale which is a place I am just loving. Underneath this town are a series of dungeons that you, a brave adventurer will be exploring for the awesome rewards that lay in wait for you. The whole game has this awesome pixel art style that just oozes personality and it makes you want to know more about this world and its characters.

Hero Up!

The last game in this series, Rivals of Aether had a great selection of characters and lore to get invested in. Dungeons of Aether is bringing four new characters to the mix. Each one with their own style and story for why they are doing what they are doing. I do like how they have said that Fleet is the character that most people should start out with. However, as well as the fox like Fleet. There is also the hammer wielding wall runner, Hamir. Slade is a badass looking pirate shark and lastly, we have Artemis who is a fierce looking dragon. They all have their own set of skills and playstyles so it will be fun for you to try them all out.

The Roll Of The Dice

The gameplay of Dungeons of Aether is rather interesting in that it is a bit of a mixture of styles. We have a typical dungeon crawler style of game here where you will be roaming these awesomely created dungeons. However, it is the combat in the game that I feel makes it stand out. It is a turn based kind of system, but you do combat with dice and you have a different dice pool and have to figure out how best to maximize your chances of success. I have no doubt there will be a bit of a learning curve here, but I also think it is a combat system that is a ton of fun too.

The Real Challenge!

I think that most people who come to Dungeons of Aether will be spending most of their time with the story, I am sure some will play the story and then that will be it and that is ok. However, this game also has a special Challenge Dungeon mode that is aimed that those hardcore rogue-like dungeon crawler fans that love a real challenge. The Challenge Dungeons will see you thrust into a randomly generated dungeon with different rules and different starting equipment so you never know what kind of challenge is going to be waiting for you.

As you can tell, I am very excited about Dungeons of Aether. I love this studio and think that they are creating a really awesome universe of games here and this is one of the rogue-like style games that has me very excited about in 2023. I think that this is going to be a ton of fun, I also feel that while this is going to be a challenging game. The developer has been very clever with the story mode as it eases players into this world and its rules.

Pros:

  • I am loving the game world they have created here
  • Each of the four heroes has their own personality, story, and play style
  • The progression system in the game will make you want to keep on playing
  • I love the pixel art and all the charm that the game has

Cons:

  • I do worry that the learning curve may turn some people off
  • Will they add more characters to the game?
