Forspoken

Forspoken follows the story of Frey, an ordinary New Yorker who suddenly finds herself transported into a fantasy world. On her wrist is a sentient bracelet who helps her orient in the new world. She is supposed to be their savior, but this gritty character has no time for such nonsense. Swearing like a sailor the whole way through, she is certainly a forceful part of the game. Although she’s certainly a powerful aspect of the game, Forspoken isn’t completely character driven.

Amazing Graphics

One of the most outstanding parts of this game is the graphics. The attention to detail is incredible. The backgrounds are well imagined and popping with details, the mobs are realistic, and everything is animated very well. This is one of the most beautiful games we have seen in a long time. The game offers a Parkour mode you can use to briefly cover uneven ground with the help of magic. These are spectacular in their special effects if short lived—you can only use parkour mode as long as your magical stamina is available.

Strong Resemblance to Final Fantasy 15

If Forspoken seems really familiar to you, it may be because it has strong ties to Final Fantasy XV. The game has the same developers, and many of the same end goals as well. Some people have even gone so far as to refer to it as a Final Fantasy game in everything but the name. This could be good or bad depending on how you look at it, but as you play the game you can see there is a definite influence on Forspoken.

Antiquated Gameplay

While the storyline is adequate and the graphics are good, the gameplay is very old school. The game plays in a series of linear missions, without a whole lot of wiggle room to explore. This is disappointing because the sheer breadth of the magic available makes combat really fun.

The combat itself is really well done and engaging, but the limits placed on it by gameplay is reminiscent of an Xbox 360 game. With so much development between now and that gaming system, one would think the game would have more to it than simple missions.

Frey Isn’t Terribly Enjoyable

It’s clear that the developers were trying to portray Frey as a gritty, no-nonsense New Yorker. Unfortunately her witty dialogue isn’t well balanced with a warm heart or other enjoyable features. The majority of her dialogue is repeating f*** in various ways. She doesn’t seem to grow in anyway throughout the game, and the repetitive swearing/dialogue gets annoying very quickly.

7

This game isn’t bad at all, but it definitely has room for growth. If you’re a fan of the Final Fantasy series and want to try something really similar, Forspoken is a great option. On the other hand, if you prefer more Open World games or you don’t enjoy one dimensional characters, you may not enjoy your time with Frey very much.

Pros:

  • Spectacular graphics
  • Unique Parkour Mode

Cons:

  • Frey can be annoying
  • Mission style gaming is very limited in scope
