Releasing September 29th, Gordy and the Monster Moon is a spooky exploration game coming out just in time for Halloween. If you love retro games yet still want to experience something fresh and new, this game has everything you need.
Gordy and the Monster Moon features Gordy, a pumpkin off on an adventure. There’s a little bit of story to help string the exploration along, but mostly, players will be using Gordy to find candy corns and avoid creepy monsters.
Gordy’s tale is framed as a story being told by a dad frog to his baby frog. These characters are actually Hop and October from a previous game by the developer.
The Monster Moon has many different biomes to explore. These biomes will have different items to collect, different monsters, and of course, puzzles. There’s a variety of different things to do in each biome, and players will have to change up how they handle different areas. Biomes include the Spooky Forest, Graveyard, Swamp and more.
Gordy has a cobweb that he uses to help himself explore throughout the biomes, and uses it to fight the different mobs. Webs are contagious, so if the player is able to attach the web to one mob, it will then start fighting for Gordy and spread the web to other mobs.
Retro Graphics and Sound
The graphics of Gordy and the Monster Moon mimic the very limited colors and processing ability of old school gaming consoles. Despite the very limited colors, the game still manages to have a sense of style, and add motion to the sprites.
Gordy’s eyes will light up on occasion, and if you catch a bad guy or land on a puzzle, it will change color or animate to indicate the player has done something to it. Think of old school games like Pac-Man or Snake, but this time it’s a Jack-o-Lantern attacking witches and zombies. Sound is also appropriate for an old school game, but once again has been purposefully limited to keep the style going.
If you ever get lost and aren’t sure how to progress in the game, Gordy’s dad can be of help. Simply ask him about what to do next, and he’ll give some suggestions to help out. This will come in handy more often as you struggle to answer the mysterious question of what is inside Lander B.
Gordy and the Monster Moon is an enjoyable romp through several Halloween themed biomes. If you are a fan of simple game mechanics and exploration style gaming, Gordy and the Monster Moon might be right for you. That being said, this game does not pretend to be anything but itself. If you prefer modern games with sharp graphics and refined controls, this game won’t be of interest. Gordy and the Monster Moon is a perfect piece of nostalgia, but it is not a very modern looking game.
