Here Comes Niko!

Atmospheric relaxation isn’t a term anyone would usually relate to 3D action platformers, but Here Comes Niko seeks to change that. Advertised as a “sleepy platformer” or a “platformer for tired people”, this charming game seeks to allow its players to unwind while asking them to complete simple tasks and cute puzzles but outright refusing to throw anything loud or overwhelming at them.

Here Comes Niko is a perfect new entry into the “cozy game” category, which has recently been propelled to new heights of popularity, especially within gaming circles on social media. Focused on robust storytelling and atmosphere, but also seeking to incorporate active action gameplay, the developers behind this game want to offer an experience that scratches an itch for both very laid back and very skilled gamers.

Story

Here Comes Niko revolves around the adventures of Niko, a young person who has started working for a company known as Tadpole Incorporated as a “professional friend”. Their new internship role requires them to travel to six different islands, each with their own unique biome, where Niko has to assist various anthropomorphic animal friends with various tasks ranging from fishing, to planting flowers and even to diving into the pocket dimension that exists inside of a sentient arcade machine in order to fish out a coin that’s making it uncomfortable.

The aim of the game is for Niko to keep his job, and ideally even excel at it, while completing missions and making real connections.

Gameplay

It’s difficult to clearly boil down the gameplay in Here Comes Niko beyond the platforming aspects. While the majority of the game is spent bouncing around the different islands on platforms that match the environment with themed zones much like Super Mario Odyssey, the game also incorporates collectible aspects which can impact the soundtrack, storyline, and overall game progression, as well as interior design in Niko’s house and jobs for different friends that include wildly different mini games. From relaxing in a sauna with one friend, to completing a task that requires Niko to Zorb (roll around in one of those giant transparent plastic orbs), each job is unique and charming in its own right.

In addition, each NPC has their own unique personality and dialogue paths of varying lengths, which is frankly imperative for a game that relies very heavily on drawing its player base in with the atmosphere and story.

That said, the platforming is definitely satisfying but it should be noted that there are no enemies and no threat of death. At most, failing a platforming puzzle lands Niko in the pristine blue waters surrounding the islands. This may be a deal-breaker if you’re looking for a game that challenges you, but Here Comes Niko never pretends to be something it’s not.

Art style

2D characters and interactable objects blend in seamlessly with a lush, colorful 3D world in this adorable platformer. The characters, and Niko especially, have a range of movement and animations, allowing for a fully immersive but still very unique gaming experience. The artistic choices will be most familiar to fans of games such as Paper Mario: The Origami King, but the choice to allow the main character to move in a 3D space in Here Comes Niko definitely feels like a marked improvement on the platformer style of Paper Mario.
