Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story

Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story is an indie spin off game from the LoL series. I will admit right now when I heard that two indie games based on League were being made I did not expect much, especially from this one when I heard it was a platforming rhythm game! Well, I ended up giving it a try and found myself well and truly addicted to it. The thing is, you do not even need to be all that familiar with LoL to get a kick out of this game.

Blowing Up The City

The little bit of story that is in Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story has a lot of charm to it. We play as explosives enthusiast Ziggs, Ziggs has decided that he would quite like to blow up the city of Pitlover. Standing in his way is Heimerdinger.

The chemistry between these two is hilarious and the cut scenes do a great job of letting you know about these characters. That is why I feel you do not have to be familiar with the League of Legends lore to enjoy this.

Bobbing (Or Bombing) To The Beat

This is a rhythm platforming game that on the surface is simple and easy, but there is an extra level to this game that makes it fiendishly difficult. Ziggs is always moving to the right. You will see button prompts throughout the level, one makes you jump, another brings you down, and the other throws bombs. You press these in time with the music and the more accurate you are the higher score you get. Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story also has hidden notes for you to find and this is where the challenge comes into play. This is a game that is all about getting the highest score, you can play and just get to the end of the 30 levels and beat the few bosses. However, score chasing is what this game is about and that is where it becomes very difficult. It can be frustrating, but when you do finish a level with a high Mayhem score, it is very rewarding.

That Funky, Funky Beat

The soundtrack in Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story is something that I really did enjoy. The whole game has a real zany and wild feel about it and this is represented in the music that plays. As well as having good music, it also looks great too, while you cannot appreciate all the details when you are playing. When I was watching a friend play I loved the way the backgrounds would bob along with the music. This is a game that really does have a ton of personality.

I will admit that I went into Hextech Mayhem: A League of Legends Story with pretty low expectations, but I found myself having a fun time with this. I am not even a massive League of Legends fan and have not played the game for quite a while! It is a game that can be played by anyone, just getting through the levels is fairly simple, but still fun.

However, it is finding the hidden notes and paths which really make this game something that is about skill. Be sure to give this one a look if you are someone who enjoys rhythm, games.

Pros:

  • I thought the chemistry between the two main characters was hilarious
  • The gameplay is simple, but there is a lot of depth and challenge here
  • It has a funky soundtrack
  • I love how bright and crazy the visuals are

Cons:

  • When going for high scores it can sometimes get a bit frustrating
  • Perhaps they could have used more recognizable League of Legends songs in the game?
