Ice Climber is an 8-bit 2D platforming game. In this game, two ice climbers attempt to climb ice-covered mountains to recover vegetables stolen by a large bird.

Gameplay

You control one of the two playable characters and use a mallet to climb to the top of an ice mountain. You use the mallet to chip away at blocks hindering your progress. As you chip off each block, a hole is created. You jump through the hole to climb higher. Once you get to the top of the mountain and grab onto the feet of the large bird, you gain access to a bonus level where you can pick up the vegetables that were stolen. If you pick a lot of vegetables within the time given, you access the summit of the ice mountain which fetches you a lot of points.

You must jump through each hole quickly as there are enemies that attempt to fill the holes that you created. You also come across polar bears, seals and other obstacles that you must surmount. You can hit those obstacles with your mallet or simply avoid them. If you fall, you die and you lose a life. Some of the platforms are movable, so you must time your jump right. Also, some of parts of the ice mountains can’t be broken so you must look for breakable sections while avoiding enemies. You must also avoid getting hit by icicles that form on parts of the mountain.

There are 32 mountains to climb. You complete the game by climbing all the 32 ice mountains. The mountains get progressively difficult to climb. You start with the simple mountains before climbing the harder ones. The harder levels might have some players flinging their gamepads with rage, but with some patience, you will finish all the game levels. Each level has 8 rows that must be climbed to get to the top.
The controls are okay and won’t give you problem. You use the directional buttons for movement. Then one other button for jumping and another button for swinging your mallet.

The music is okay and blends well with the gameplay smoothly. Some players might find the game a wee bit repetitive. Also, the story is almost non-existential but that is normal for games that were released in the ‘80s.

Co-op

There is a two-player co-op mode that allows a second player to play the game. Two ice breakers appear instead of one. Both of you can choose to climb the game mountains together or you can compete against each other to see who reaches the top of the mountain first.

Pros

  • Interesting gameplay
  • Challenging, but not too difficult

Cons

  • Outdated gameplay and graphics for these modern times
8

Ice Climber is a simple, fun game for everyone. Those that played it back in the days will enjoy it more than other players thanks to the feelings of nostalgia it will evoke in them. The couch multiplayer is good and suitable for nice, bonding moments with family and friends.
