Infamous: Festival of Blood is a standalone expansion of Infamous 2, an open-world action/adventure game where you play as a super-powered hero named Cole McGrath. Set in the fictional urban landscape of New Marais, players once again hop into the shoes of Cole, this time spending his time running around the spooky-themed “Pyre Night” festival in an effort to rid the town of vampires. With a cheeky narrative, interesting new vampire-based powers, and explosive enemy encounters, Infamous: Festival of Blood is a creepy expansion that is great for any fan of the Infamous franchise.
Main Game Features
- Comic book style cutscenes
- User-generated missions
- Dozens of collectibles to find
Festival of Blood takes place in the same universe as Infamous 2, but is a satirical tale meant as a ridiculous trek through a thematic night of vampire-fun.
Although the story still focuses on Cole McGrath, the plot itself is told by Cole's best friend Zeke, as he attempts to impress an attractive woman at a bar. After taking interest in his comic book, Zeke weaves a tale of fright about Cole's attempts to rid the city of a vampire infestation. Plagued with the vampire curse himself, Cole has eight hours to solve the mysteries of New Marais' vampire problem, working alongside a mysterious figure known as Bloody Mary. While the tone and concept of Festival of Blood's storyline are enough to get you motivated, the plot itself falters in execution. This is forgivable though, mostly due to the explosive gameplay the story affords.
Infamous: Festival of Blood is very similar in gameplay style to the base Infamous 2 game, giving players complete control over Cole's extremely powerful abilities. In addition to his existing arsenal of powers, Cole's new vampire form also gives him a variety of new moves. For example, Cole's primary melee ability has been altered, putting a bigger focus on melee combat. There are no penalties for killing innocent civilians, as Cole must harvest blood to stay healthy. You can also fly through the air in a swarm of bats, opening up more navigation options as you explore the city.
This shorter experience takes place over a single night, resulting in an extremely brief run time. Festival of Blood contains plenty of exciting encounters, leading to explosive bouts of third-person action. However, there are a limited number of missions, offering only a couple of hours of gameplay to enjoy. Despite the small list of story-based missions, Festival of Blood offers some replayability, as players can also create custom missions like just like in Infamous 2. There are also several hidden collectibles around New Marais to discover, giving you something to do after the main story is completed. Even with this extra content, don't expect too many hours of gameplay, as Festival of Blood is a short and sweet affair.
While there are a handful of action games based on vampires, few have as much style as Infamous: Festival of Blood. One of the biggest disappointments about the game is its length, not its quality, which goes to show that the base mechanics of Infamous 2 remain strong. The quirky plot is a fun concept and does a good job setting up a night of bloody entertainment, but as far as compelling stories go, it's not the best.
That said, if you're a fan of third-person action games or spooky, vampire-themed adventures, Infamous: Festival of Blood is definitely worth playing.
- Fun narrative concept
- Violent, bloody combat
- Horror tones
- Too short
- Not enough side-activities
- Plot is underwhelming
