KarmaZoo is a cooperative multiplayer platformer that focuses on working together with strangers to earn "Karma" and complete levels. In KarmaZoo, you team up with up to 10 random players online in an endless mode called The Loop. The levels adapt based on your group size and chosen character abilities, so no two runs feel quite the same. Sticking together and utilizing your strengths is key to success here. The true joy comes from cooperating with strangers from around the world towards a common goal.
At its core, KarmaZoo shares DNA with games like Rain World and Hollow Knight as a 2D sidescrolling Metroidvania, but its multiplayer hook and karma system help it stand out as unique. I immediately took to the bright, playful art style and characters. It's a refreshing change of pace from the dark and gloomy aesthetics often seen in this genre. Helping teammates earns you karma, which can then be used to unlock new characters and perks for future runs.
This karma system is genius, incentivizing teamwork in a genre notorious for lone-wolf gameplay. Sacrificing yourself to save a teammate becomes an investment rather than a loss. The karma carries over between runs, so even failed attempts still bring you closer to new unlocks. It effectively gamifies being a good person.
Visually Captivating Level Design
The levels in KarmaZoo are gorgeous, with a bright color palette and smooth animations. Lush jungles, fiery volcanoes, and mysterious temples create constantly shifting backdrops. Hazards like rolling boulders and wiggly vines liven up the standard platforming obstacles.
The environments have a painted quality reminiscent of games like Gris and Journey. Pausing to appreciate the scenery is rewarded through collectibles and hidden secrets. It nails the atmosphere of an exotic adventure.
Accessible Cooperative Gameplay
Despite the tricky platforming challenges, KarmaZoo remains accessible thanks to the cooperative focus. You can be carried by more skilled teammates while still contributing through support abilities. Simple characters like the Doctor heal allies, while the Engineer can build bridges past gaps.
This creates room for players of any skill level to feel helpful. Optional mini-games also provide a stress-free way to practice traversal skills. The approachability combined with the randomly generated levels makes jumping into quick 5-10 minute sessions a joy.
In the End, It's About Friendship
While KarmaZoo nails the mechanics, its biggest strength is the community it fosters. I've had countless moments of camaraderie and laughter with total strangers in the game's chat. Saving someone from certain death forges an immediate bond.
The focus on karma over individual performance creates a welcoming environment. I've even added several teammates as friends after our runs concluded. Moments like these are what gaming is all about. It offers the perfect antidote for the all-too-common toxicity of online gaming.
KarmaZoo delivers a one-of-a-kind cooperative experience that innovates on the multiplayer platformer genre. Its karma system and focus on teamwork provide a refreshing change of pace for the genre.
Pros:
- Gorgeous visual style
