When I heard that Kingdom Builders was a mixture of city building and action RPG I was very interested in the game. Add to this a fantasy setting and a very appealing art style and it became a game that I kept a very close eye on. The game is not yet complete, but I feel that there is more than enough here for us to take a look at today to see if it is worthy of your time.
A King And Two Sons
I was very surprised at how good the story of Kingdom Builders was. There is this king, a good and kind king and he has two sons one called, Eadric who is the older brother and his younger sibling. One day they are out exploring when inside a cave they come across an artifact called the Nightshard. Eadric ignores his younger brother and grabs it, becoming corrupted in the process.
They run back to their father and Eadric now possessed by the Nightshard, kills him and takes the throne. The younger brother runs for miles to find a new home and to prepare for the attack he knows is coming.
All In The Family
The gameplay of Kingdom Builders sees you needing to gather various resources so that you can make a building and create a settlement where you will have people that will help you. These people will follow you and do what you do. So, if you attack an enemy they will attack, if you are chopping down a tree for wood, they will do that too. It is pretty fun when you have a bunch of little guys following you around. You can go into dungeons (which are randomly generated) where you can find valuable resources that will help with your city building.
When night comes is when your brother and his minions will come looking for you. You need to build defenses and get ready to fight them off and survive until morning when you can try and improve on your settlement. There is also a skill point system here too so there is a decent level of progression in the game without it being too complex.
The Prince’s Awakening
I was racking my brain trying to think what game Kingdom Builders reminded me of in terms of its visuals and then it hit me, Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening HD for the Nintendo Wii. This game has that same kind of cutesy and smooth art style and I think it is just so charming that I would love some merch of this game.
As well as looking good, this game also sounds good and the story has some fantastic voice acting. Check out the trailer and trust me when I tell you that it will get you pretty pumped up and make you want to play the game.
I think that the blend of city-building and action RPG that Kingdom Builders is offering is something that is a great deal of fun. I like the way the developer has more focused on the “fun” aspect rather than bogging the game down with tons of mechanics that can make it a hard game to get into and enjoy. If you like city-building games check this one out as the action it offers makes it stand out from the rest.
- I love the whole cutesy style the game has
- The gameplay is quite varied, but easy to get into
- I thought the story the game told was very interesting
- Watching your little followers help you out is awesome
- The game may not be as deep as some people would like in a game of this style
- I do wonder how long the game will be in early access
