I would have to say that Letters - a written adventure is one of the most original ideas for a game that I have seen in a very long time. This is a puzzle game that is also very story-driven. There is a free demo for the PC and the Nintendo Switch right now and I have played through this demo several times already. I was so ready for the release of this game that I planned my whole weekend around it. It is a charming coming of age story that is all wrapped up in a truly unique puzzle game.
Hi, I Am Sarah
The plot of Letters - a written adventure is about a young girl called Sarah in the 90s. We get to grow with Sarah, hear about her annoying sister, who her friends are, who she loves, what her dreams are, and what she likes to do.
Ultimately, we get to help shape Sarah into the kind of person that we want her to be. It is pretty awesome how she goes from being a little kid with pen pal letters in the 90s to the digital age as a teenager and communicating with people online.
Making Words Making Progress
I am trying really hard to think of how to eloquently describe the gameplay of Letters - a written adventure. We control Sarah and she literally walks around words. She can move words around to make new words. You can split words apart to take part of one word and move it to another, if you put blue next to bird for example the bird would turn blue. The puzzle aspect of the game comes from figuring out what words to split and what new words to make. It kind of reminds me a bit of Letter Quest and Scribblenauts. It sounds super complicated, but the demo was very easy to get into and you do feel very smart when something clicks.
Nauts To These Scribbles
Remember a few seconds ago when I compared Letters - a written adventure to Scribblenauts? Well, that kind of goes for the visuals as well. This is a truly gorgeous looking game. It all plays out in pen pal letters, websites and social media type things on the computer. It sounds like the kind of thing you have seen before, but this game has an art style that is rather unique and it has a lot of fun to it. Even though it is kind of like a cartoon, you do grow pretty connected to Sarah and see her as a real person.
So far 2022 has had some very interesting games and I would have to put Letters - a written adventure close to the top of the list when it comes to games, I am interested in. It is a truly special and unique kind of puzzle game. The puzzle solving aspect of the game is fun, challenging, and really does make you think.
However, the whole game just has an absolute ton of heart and it is impossible not to fall in love with it.
Pros:
- I really liked Sarah as a character
- The game has a very interesting art style
- The puzzle aspect of the game is very unique
- It is a coming of age story at its heart
Cons:
- Some of the puzzles may be a tad hard to figure out
- It will be a damn shame if someone like Limited Run does not make a physical version of this
