Today we are taking a good look at Lost Ruins which was a bit of a Kickstarter success story and a game that I am very excited about. It is a 2D action and adventure game with a real old-school soul to it all. It has a dark fantasy setting and some truly fantastic 2D sprites that really do grab your attention. While this kind of game has been done many times before, if you enjoy this type of thing, I do think that there is more than enough here to keep you entertained.
Waking Up On The Wrong Side Of The Dungeon
Our main character is a feisty young woman who has awoken in a very strange place with no memory of who she is or how she got here. She comes across a powerful magical being called Beatrice who will help her and who also serves as a kind of narrator filling in the story. There is not a ton here, but I was certainly invested enough to want to know who this girl was and why she woke up in the dungeon.
Look At The Size Of Those!
Lost Ruins is a great-looking game. I know that at this point some people are getting sick of the 2D pixel art thing, but I think when it is done well it truly is amazing, especially if you grew up in the 8 and 16-bit days. These sprites are fantastic, the main characters and many of the creatures you encounter are on the small size, but the animation is incredible!
What really blew me away was some of the larger sprites that the game has. These are incredible and there is no way my beloved Super Nintendo could have done stuff like this back in the day, especially with this level of animation. I have played a lot of 2D games and there will be many more released in 2021, but this is one of the best ones I have seen!
By My Blade!
The gameplay of Lost Ruins is very satisfying. I am much more of a melee kind of player and I love how fast-paced the combat is. Yes, you can play things more strategically if you want, deflecting enemy attacks for example. I am more of a smash your head in with a giant ax or beat you with this soft bunny kind of player. You move quickly and I love the variety of the weapons. I think the combat being so fluid is probably going to be what keeps most people playing this game.
Or My Wand!
I thought that this would be a melee-based kind of game, but there are many magical spells that you can learn too. The one that I found the most useful was the freezing one, but there are many others that you can learn and use as you put a beating on these evil creatures. I do like to dabble in a little bit of both, but the melee combat is more my style. Moving through each area, taking down monsters, fighting bosses, figuring out simple puzzles is all a great deal of fun.
I think that Lost Ruins is a game that is just pure fun to play. I have to say I am not sure it is the kind of game I would come back to time and time again, but while it lasts it is a very good time. The game is just so easy to get into and while there is a level of skill that you can get to in the game. I do also feel that it can be very good as a button masher too if that is how you prefer to play your 2D action games.
