Maglam Lord

When I read the description of Maglam Lord that said, an action JRPG straight from the depths of hell, I knew that this was something I had to check out. I first heard about this game last summer, but it recently popped up on my radar so I thought I would once again take a closer look. While is on more than just the Nintendo Switch, it is the Nintendo Switch version of the game that most interests me. Being able to play an epic JRPG while laying in bed is something that I have really gotten used to!

The Demon Inside Me

What I love about the story that Maglam Lord is telling, is that we get to play as a demon. Now the story will have way more twists and turns than the basic premise, but I think the premise is more than enough to get people invested. We play as a demon lord called, Killizzerk and you can play them as either a male or female, they are not just a demon lord, but the demon lord of swords. You have lost your powers and now you roam the land trying to get them back and save your species from extinction!

Jumping Between Dimensions

The gameplay of Maglam Lord is very fast-paced, it is actually one of the quickest paced JRPGs I have seen in quite some time. You can move around the overworld really quickly, but when you hit an enemy, you get taken to a battle screen, and here things have a more 2D style to them. The combat is very fast and you have to hack and slash as well as using your abilities and filling your DG Gauge so that you can perform these epic ultimate attacks. I know I used the term “hack and slash” however there are many strategies that you can use to make combat deeper and more fun.

More Than Blood Splatting!

There is more to Maglam Lord than just lots and lots of combat. You also have a nice and large world that you can explore. Here you can come across items that you can use to craft all kinds of cool stuff such as magical weapons that can really go a long way to helping you in combat as well as making your version of Killizzerk feel special to you. There is also a bit of a social dynamic here as there are many interesting characters that you will meet on your travels you can take them into battle and even go on dates!

Cute, But Deadly

I love the whole visual style of this game, it has a very fun personality, but it is dark at the same time if that makes sense. The art team behind Maglam Lord has done an amazing job here in creating great character and creature designs and a world that is so well designed, you want to go and explore it. I imagine that on the Switch Oled, this game would truly look amazing.

There has been no shortage of JRPGs in the last couple of years and we have had some truly awesome ones too! I do though think that Maglam Lord is doing enough to stand out from the rest.

Pros:

• I love the idea of playing as a demon lord!
• The story is a lot of fun and one hell of an adventure
• You get to meet and interact with some very interesting characters
• The gameplay is fast-paced and a whole lot of fun

Cons:

• I hope that the Switch version does not chug when things get too hectic on the screen
• From what I have seen so far there is no English voice acting
