Just when you thought the development of zombie survival games had peaked, Mist Survival arrived on the scene as the promising product of a sole developer. Mist Survival was originally offered up on Steam early access, and at first glance, it looked more like a project that would promise a lot, and deliver very little. Having said that, with updates still being released, the game is becoming a survival simulation to savour.
The premise of Mist survival is simple, and leaves much to the imagination. Years prior, a mysterious mist rolled over the world, killing many, turning more to zombies, and leaving few survivors, which were somehow immune to the mist. We assume the role of a survivor, and we now need to work to survive greater dangers. Mist Survival takes a concept that we’re so familiar with, and creates a unique, complex experience.
You’ll find yourself trying to stave off hunger and thirst, building tools, gathering resources, and fighting off zombies in your desperate need to survive the unforgiving wilderness. You also need to be aware of multiple health gages which can all contribute to your downfall, these are: hunger, health, thirst, fatigue, stamina and cold.
As zombies lurk in the mist, and threaten you from the darkness, you need to wander the wilderness finding resources to make your survival easier. You’ll also need to find a safe place, somewhere you can bunker down for the night, but you need to explore different areas and weigh up your options. Weapons can be found and used to kill the undead, but having that stronghold to retreat back to, offers a much welcomed relief and adds a more prominent sense of realism to the game.
The attention to detail is also impressive - the abandoned houses for example - if you decide to make one of them your fortress, you are able to transfer resources from your inventory to the cupboards, which makes for a cool storage space feature.
In Mist Survival, players need to hunt, mine, farm and forge their way through daily life. Despite gathering resources, you can also carry out good deeds, and help other people in the world, meaning you can also forge allies which can aid you in your struggle. Rescuing people from the camps of bandits is a great way to have them help you with simple tasks.
You can craft raw materials, and also use some of the resources you gather to make important tools, in order to build up your stronghold or fix up vehicles. The requirements of survival always keep you on your toes, you can’t just hide away. Need to drink some water from a lake? You’ll need a water purifier first. Need to eat? You’ll need to gather firewood, start a fire, and then go out and hunt some meat. If you can evade those trying to hunt you of course.
How Does The Game Hold Up?
Having experienced the game in early access, to the point where it’s at now, Mist Survival is nothing short of impressive. Despite the over saturation of survival simulation games, Mist Survival brings a unique charm to the genre. Other survival games like 7 Days To Die and Green Hell are great games in their own right, but Mist Survival is a concept which if pulled off, would be an achievement head and shoulders above the rest. For the work of a lone developer, it’s already a spectacular accomplishment.
Compared to other survival games like 7 Days To Die and Green Hell, Mist Survival is the most improved. It’s going to be interesting to see where the game heads next, and what more it can bring to the table.
Given the game is still being regularly updated, I’d rate the current version 7/10. It could be an amazing experience, and hopefully it gets the content and recognition it deserves.
