MONARK is a very cool and stylish JRPG that I am pretty surprised more people are not talking about. It has a very dark and brooding kind of style to it and it is one of the more interesting looking JRPGs that have been released in the early part of 2022. Clearly, the game is not finished as I write this, but I thought we could look at what we know about the game and some of the features which I think sound pretty cool. If you are into JRPGs, this is certainly one that you want to keep a close eye on.

Saving The One's You Love

The game takes place around an academy called, Shin Mikado Academy, and the story of MONARK sees the academy covered in a strange mist. This mist is no joke and your friends are in grave danger unless you are willing to stand up, be a hero and try to save them.

To do this, you head into another dimension called, Otherworld, this place is very dangerous and filled with daemons! If you can stave off madness, you may just be able to save all of your friends. This story is very typical JRPG stuff and I can see why some people are throwing light Persona 5 comparisons at it.

You Have Such A Big Ego!

The whole battle and fiend (familiar) system that is at play in MONARK sounds, unlike anything I have heard of before. The way it works is that you have these fiends which are able to command in battle. The stronger your ego, the better control over them in battle you are going to have. You strengthen your ego by partaking in psychological tests. If your ego is strong enough, your fiends will be stronger in battle. Of course, in typical JRPG fashion, exploring, talking to characters, finding new items, and so on are all here. However, it is the whole ego and fiend relationship that has me most interested when it comes to the gameplay.

The Visuals Sure Are “Golden”

If someone showed me ten or so screenshots of MONARK and told me this was a new game in the Persona series, I would believe them. I already mentioned Person when talking about the story, but I do think the visuals have that kind of style to them as well.

That is not a knock on this game at all, far from it! I love the style of this game and the darkness of this Otherworld is something that I think is really neat. The character models have a ton of personality to them too, which is brought to life even more so thanks to the excellent voice acting the game has.

So far, so good when it comes to MONARK. I am very impressed by what I have experienced with this game so far. It has what I want from a JRPG, all the while having some tricks up its sleeve like the ego system I mentioned and there is also this thing with tarot cards as well which is pretty neat. If you enjoy JRPGs, you have to check this one out. However, I do not think that this is the kind of game that is going to be ideal for someone looking to try out their first JRPG.

I am very invested in the story that is being told here
I like the idea of having to go to another dimension to save my friends
The battle system and the whole ego thing with the fiends you command is interesting
The visuals and the sound are both fantastic
