Ooh this is a good one. If you are looking for a solid combat game with hilarious mechanics set in medieval times then Mordhau by Triternion is the game for you. Get ready to jump into large battles with your friends or complete strangers with your sword swinging and immediately be killed by someone better than you. It’s so much fun!
Mordau is, for all intents and purposes, a hack and slash, plain and simple. It features a strong emphasis on hand-to-hand combat with a pretty loose grounding in actual historical techniques. Running into battle like a mad man with a death wish, you can use feints, redirections alongside alternative uses of weapons like booping people in the face with the handle as opposed to the pointy bit; that’s ingenuity.
But don’t, for a second, believe that that is everything. There are ranged weapons, siege engines and mounted combat available for all your combat needs, allowing you to switch it up it a profoundly fun and interesting way. You don’t have to stick to the beaten path like everyone else, you can forge your own way into battle.
There is a decent amount of customization for your mercenaries here, switching out the face, body type, voice and such, its all cosmetic and has no bearing on your ability so you are free to look however you want and suffer no penalty. Using the in-game points, you can also edit things like your armor and weapons or your perks so that you can play your way. On top of all this, there is a handsome selection of game modes available. Frontline, which is a battle of attrition. Invasion which is a capture the hill type game. They have a horde mode and a Team deathmatch and loads more.
Setting and Design
The game has a medieval setting which means that there is a lot of swords, bows, siege engines, horses and more. No perfect accuracy rifles here, Mordau shares many similarities to games like Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, the half-life mod Age of Chivalry or perhaps even Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
If I have to be honest, the game actually looks really good. Everything looks and feels time period appropriate. The weapons and environment look clean and shiny but with an overcast greyness that you’d expect from a battle in Europe. A high amount of praise is deserved for how tidy this title is.
Psst, hey, over here…. there’s dismemberment in this game and its brutal and awesome.
All hail medieval multiplayer hack and slash titles, for they are some of the funniest games that you can play. This stands high on the pedestal with the other classics that I mentioned earlier. Jumping into combat with your pals is enormous fun that doesn’t get old quickly. With the game modes and lobby sizes available, there is a lot of gameplay that you won’t tire of any time soon.
This is a game that packs a tremendous amount of fun and enjoyment into a medieval setting. If you and your mates are looking for a hilarious new game to play then this is the one for you.
- Awesome gameplay.
- Looks amazing.
- It’s kind of a shame that there’s no story.
- A larger open world environment would be brilliant.
