MX Simulator

If you are a hardcore MX fan, MX Simulator is the game for you. This is not an arcade style racing game, which was a mistake I made when I checked it out! It is very important that you know this is all about realism and being as authentic and realistic to the sport as can be! If you are actually into dirt bike racing, you are going to get a huge kick out of this I am sure. I feel that this is the kind of game that is made for a very niche kind of audience, but for that audience, this is going to be the most addictive and epic game ever.

Let Me Take You Back To 2004

Ok, so before I get into the game that is MX Simulator, I have to tell you where I stand with these types of games. I grew up loving Excitebike on the NES and I loved Excitebike 64 even more. On a whim, my folks showed up to my university accommodation with a gift and that gift was MX Unleased, the last game in that series before it jumped to the XV vs ATV series that we know and love today. Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that I love dirt bike games, but arcade style dirt bike games. I came into this game thinking it was going to be that kind of thing, but this is as sim as you can get.

Made For Real Fans

What MX Simulator has going for it is a level of realism that hardcore MX fans will just eat up. No word of a lie here, it took me a good four tries to make it round the first tight bend! You see, this game has been made by a developer that knows their stuff and as a result, the handling of the dirt bikes is as realistic as you can get. You cannot just fly around the corners like you do in MX Unleashed! This is a game that is going to demand that you put the time in and learn how to actually play it. At first, I was frustrated as hell, but once I started to get to grips with the weight of the bike, using the clutch, and trying to read the track in front of me, the addictive quality that the game has really started to take hold of me.

Taking It To The Mud

There is a lot to do in MX Simulator. I ended up just messing with the different championship modes where you score points by winning races. However, what really has MX fans loving this is the online content. There is a hardcore online community that takes the racing in this really seriously and there is even an official leaderboard. Let me tell you, I tried to get into this… let me just say that my skills were severely lacking. To be great at this, you have to be willing to put in the work. As well as the offline and online racing, there is a track editor as well. The base game already has a lot of content, but thanks to the community, the game is packed with stuff that you can use.

Thrilling Speed

I may sound harsh here, but MX Simulator is not exactly a game that is easy on the eyes. Granted I unfairly am comparing it to stuff like Motorstorm and the most recent MX vs ATV Legends game. However, this has more of a PlayStation 3 and early PlayStation 3 look about it in my opinion. It is not an ugly game by any means and I do think the fact that this is so heavily built around being played online may be why it is a little basic in the looks department. Actually, to be fair, you could write what I know about dirt bikes on the back of a postage stamp so perhaps the bike models in the game look great.

7.5

If you want to know if MX Simulator is a game you should play, let me first ask you a question. Are you a hardcore fan of MX racing? If you said yes, then yes you should play this game as the hardcore and sim like elements of the bike handling will really appeal to you. If you are like me and like to think that you love dirt bikes, even though you have never been on one and just love dirt bike arcade racing games, chances are you will have a hard time getting into this game. If you are a big fan of the sport, you can probably add a whole point to my score.

Pros:

  • The online community is very active and competitive
  • There are tons of tracks to race on
  • MX fans will love the realistic handling of the bikes
  • The game is still being supported

Cons:

  • The handling takes a long time to get to grips with
  • If you are usually into arcade racers, you will probably find this frustrating
