MX Superfly is the second game in the MX series from THQ. If you actually looked at all of the games that are part of this series and sub-series it would probably blow your mind! To be fair, the majority of these games are a great deal of fun and when this was released in 2002 it was a pretty big step up from the original game.

What Style Is Yours?

One of the things that is really cool about MX Superfly is that it offers you two ways to play the main game. The career mode is pretty massive and if you are more of a freestyle kind of racer, you can choose to stick with that and do the more “trick” and wild style of MX racing which is neat. Also, you can focus on racing if you want to be more of an MX racer. You will be pretty amazed at how much the career mode has for you to sink your teeth into. The racing action is more arcade than simulation and I am honestly fine with that as I feel it makes the game more fun.

Muddy, But Good Mud

This is a game that was released in 2002 so the graphics are not exactly going to blow you away. Thankfully as this is an MX game the muddiness and dirtiness of the visuals is actually a bit of a positive and has helped it age a little bit better than you would think. The game has a solid framerate and the animations of the bike and the rider are quite realistic for their time.

Rocking Good Time

To go along with these visuals, we have a pretty damn awesome soundtrack. MX Superfly like most other games in the series features a licensed soundtrack that fits the racing perfectly. This along with the bike noises really do help get you pumped up while you are trying to win a race.

So Much To Do!

We already talked about the career mode, but this game is pretty stacked with modes. You can just try different races if you want to fine-tune your skills as a racer. However, what kept me coming back time and time again to MX Superfly was the mini-games. Bus Jump and Step Up return from the previous game, but there is one mini-game that well and truly hooked me.

That mini-game is called Moto-Golf which is like Golf, but you are racing from hole to hole. There are other game modes too so there is a great deal to keep you busy here. Also, as you would expect these mini-games are even more fun when you have a buddy to play with.

I know that later games may do what MX Superfly does, but better. However, in playing this game again for this review I was surprised at how well it held up. The game is just a lot of fun to play and those mini-games are awesome. If you like MX games, do not be scared to give this one a try as it has held up way better than you would think.

Pros:

  • Plenty of courses to race on
  • Two different styles of MX racing
  • The mini-games are awesome
  • Whoever invented Moto-Golf is a freaking genius

Cons:

  • The game looks a bit dated
  • I must admit that some of the later games are much better
