Paint the Town Red
So you’ve decided to treat yourself after a long week at work. The boss has been killing you with paperwork and after the painstaking dedication and working around the clock, you manage to finish your assignment. You tell yourself you deserve a drink and take yourself to the local watering hole and find a lively crowd drinking, chatting and generally having a good time. Then without hesitation, you decide to manically punch, kick, stab and beat the pub regulars until you stand alone drenched in the blood of the innocent bystanders you happened upon. Well, this is the entire premise for Paint The Town Red.
This title plays rather like the VR title, Drunken Bar Fight where you also start scuffles with your fellow paying customers. However, it has an art style that is akin to the pixelated Beat-em-up Spartan Fist and a winner takes all battle style similar to the likes of Fortnite or Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout. In short, it’s a blood bath with only one rule, there are no rules.
There Will be Blood
This game gives you every opportunity to cause chaos when you enter various areas. You’ll have the ability to punch and kick then also, you’ll have the ability to pick up and use just about anything you find in the environment. So you’ll be able to use stray chairs, stools, knives or any level specific item that you find and use it to your advantage. Then if that’s not wacky enough for you, you can enter bullet time and use finger guns to actually blow your enemies brains out the back of their head. As you might have guessed, realism isn’t the focus of this game.
The gore content is also something that is over the top. You’ll see an abundance of little cube blocks of red splattering over the levels as you go. You’ll often wonder if it’s yours or your opponents and quite frankly, that’s the incredibly fun part of this game. It’s the frantic frenzy to stay alive that makes this one very replay-able and surprisingly challenging too.
The game devs upon release made it very clear that this game would feature no clear plot or storyline with all focus being poured into gameplay assets. While it seems to have made the gameplay a very fun experience, it’s a little disappointing that there is no motivation or overarching goal for the game. It doesn’t really affect the player initially but as the game progresses, you begin to ask yourself exactly why your mindlessly attacking everything that moves.
The mindlessness is only supported through the extremely repetitive soundtrack. You’ll find yourself bashing and stabbing away, only to find a moment of clarity that will see you put down the controller and probably not return to this title. It’s not that the game isn’t fun, it just doesn’t sink its hooks into the player when it has the chance.
Brawls to the walls
This game in terms of it’s concept is a fantastic idea that has been carried out very competently. The areas you visit are varied, the art style in these environments and overall is unique and well rendered. The gameplay is fun and frantic, just as it should be. The key issue, however, is that after a short amount of time, you’ll find yourself losing interest in this title due to the repetitive nature of the gameplay, the lack of story or varied soundtrack.
Bosses, new items and other small details will perhaps help you see this one through to the end but in general, this game is a fun game that didn’t achieve its full potential.
- Fun, frantic gameplay
- Bosses in levels keep things interesting
- The fun art style and varied environments
- Repetitive soundtrack
- Lack of motivation to keep playing
