Gotta catch em’ all! We sure have sang that tune for 20+ years and we aren’t going to be stopping anytime soon. Thankfully, it’s a fun adventure to explore what new creatures the world has to offer in Pokemon Ultra Moon.
A strong enhancement
As an enhanced edition of the previous Pokemon Moon entry, Ultra Moon seems like the perfect version of a Pokemon Game that could not quite become a part of the current generation of video game consoles. Still, it manages to shine through and make its mark as a great Pokemon game.
Subtle and obvious changes
Pokemon Ultra Moon does not shy away from touching the smallest details from Pokemon Moon, showing the developer’s dedication to ensuring that this game is the best version of their original creation. This shines through in small changes like the User Interface (UI) receiving a color upgrade with brighter hues. We also see the addition of quick save to the game and a way to speed up dialogue, avoiding the slow conversations that took away from the excitement during the game’s first act.
Melemele Island is also a recipient of some changes, similar to how we got some updates with Pokemon Black 2 and White 2, the main area is now much more pleasing to look at thanks to the addition of more popping colors to entice players.
Recent Pokemon games like Pokemon Legends: Arceus have taken a more Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild approach to the open world, but Ultra Moon still has that classic feel we are used to.
New parallel dimensions
If you thought this was just a cosmetic upgrade, think again. Ultra Moon along with its Sun counterpart takes things to the next level with the addition of pocket dimensions that can now be explored with the use of Ultra Wormholes. A legendary Pokemon can be your steed as you hop into Ultra Space and search for rare Ultra Wormholes. These Wormholes are important to find because they can give you access to rare Pokemon within the Alola Region. Even better, there’s a chance to find Legendary Pokemon using the wormholes.
Updated gameplay mechanics
Pokemon Ultra Moon also gives us some nice quality of life changes within the actual gameplay experience. Some quests have been redesigned to make it easier for players to track what the objectives are. We loved this addition because the original Pokemon Moon was very tedious, especially during Mallow’s trial that was updated to give you more hints on what to do, rather than just wandering around and trying to locate foodstuff.
While Ultra Moon has some really exciting and welcome additions, we still think that the story and gameplay is pretty much the same. This isn’t bad as an enhanced edition is supposed to be the more cohesive version of the original game. If you’ve never had your hands on the original Pokemon Moon or Pokemon Sun, this is a great chance to step in and play it in the best way possible.
