Do you like Fallout? Do you like Pokémon? Okay, well how about the weirdest blend of those two Intellectual Properties that actually turned out to be an absolute banger of a game. Prepare your body for the irradiated region of Tandor and its Geiger-responsive Pokémon inhabitants in Pokémon Uranium. Battle you battle your way through a completely land and story that perfectly accents a game that, if anything else, nearly improves upon everything we’ve seen from Pokémon so far.
This game handles very similarly to many other versions of Pokémon that we have come accustomed to. It is nearly identical everything from Pokémon Red all the way to Pokémon Moon.
There are a bunch of really cool features that have mechanical importance, like friendship. (Never thought the power of friendship would have any actual bearing but here we are.) It brings it all the stuff we love, including but not limited to 8 gyms, 13 towns, 6 optional side quests, GTS, wonder trade and virtual trainer. They also brought in mega evolution, mystery gifts and multiple save files.
I’m going to give it to you straight; this game has a brilliant story to it. I was really impressed by the titles desire to create something interesting and fantastical but still grounded in issues that we face through the aggression of the west. This comes through in the theme of nuclear power, a bit like Godzilla. The story takes place after a nuclear reactor meltdown causes a great deal of Pokémon to become irradiated which changes their forms and makes them more aggressive, we’ll get into that a bit more in the third point. Following your choice of three available heroes, you travel through this world and interact with many different characters and Pokémon that are native to this land.
The story also lightly addresses other themes such as loss and grief through the protagonist’s mother passing away due to the nuclear plant’s meltdown and fathers subsequent reclusion. During the story’s events, there is a larger threat at play in the form of a heavily irradiated man-made Pokémon that looms over the region, waiting to destroy it. Its’s so good and it hits a lot harder than many other Pokémon.
New Pokémon and People
One thing that cannot be overstated is the impressive amount of Pokémon that this game has created to fit its theme. Not only have they created a new Pokémon Type in the form of Nuclear Type. Not only have then created all these Pokémon and characters but they’ve also gone through the effort to create appropriate sprites to help sell the whole idea. They’ve introduced over 190 different Pokémon species, some of which are uranium only
This game was originally designed on RPG maker by a small collection of developers lead by ~JV~ but after the game suffered multiple DMCA takedown notices from none other than Nintendo themselves, they ceased official work. However, many of the community created a new website and continued developing patches for the base game.
Despite Nintendo’s dislike of the title, it was nominated for “Best Fan Creation” in the 2016 Game Awards; proving that it was an outstanding title then, just as it is now.
If you are after a Pokémon game that actually tries something a little different and breaks away from Nintendo’s tried and tested formula then this is definitely the one to go for, I highly recommend.
